‘I Have Concerns’ – Republican Politician Calls on WNBA to Protect Sophie Cunningham’s Fans Amid Trans-Athlete Controversy

Republican Ken Paxton calls for the protection of Sophie Cunningham’s fans amid the WNBA’s trans-athlete debate.

The WNBA’s politically charged atmosphere has reached another level in recent weeks. It started when Sophie Cunningham spoke out on the inclusion of female-only locker rooms while calling for restrictions on trans athletes in women’s sports. It sent shockwaves through the WNBA, igniting a fierce debate about inclusion and fairness. The clothing brand XX-XY took notice of Cunningham’s statement and backed the Indiana athlete.

Cunningham’s fans wanted to support their favourite athlete and her message by wearing XX-XY t-shirts at the Atlanta Dream-Indiana Fever game. However, they were asked to cover up by Atlanta security, causing a social media firestorm. Now, commentary from a Republican politician has put the WNBA under the scanner.

Republican Politician Defends Sophie Cunningham Fans After WNBA’s Statement

Initially, Georgia locals Kasey Thomason and her daughter Annie did not have much hindrance regarding their shirts. They had bought tickets just two rows back from courtside and were able to watch the majority of the game without any issues. However, the game went into overtime, and the security guard told them that the fans were offended by their shirts, according to Fox News.

It incited a major uproar which the WNBA had to address. “The WNBA is aware of interactions at last night’s game in Atlanta in which fans were asked by league security to cover their shirts. This should not have happened,” the league said. However, it did little to dim the controversy. Now, the Texas attorney general who plans on running for the US Senate has expressed his support for Sophie Cunningham and her fans.

“Look, I think they’re working on it,” Ken Paxton told Fox News Digital. “I have concerns … but I’m hopeful that things are getting better in that regard.” However, there is no official involvement in the issue from Paxton yet. “Look, we’re looking at it,” Paxton said. “We wanna make sure that they are treated fairly.”

Sophie Cunningham has continued to receive rallying support from fans throughout the WNBA. Before the Indiana Fever faced the Dallas Wings at the American Airlines Center, her supporters organised a rally outside the stadium.

Texas Values organised the event with Moms for Liberty, Moms for America and the Independent Council on Women’s Sports, or ICONS, starting 3 hours before the 7 pm tip-off. The groups promoted the rally as an effort to “save women’s sports” and support Sophie Cunningham’s position.
