‘Her Own Players Won’t Defend Her’ – Novelist Slams WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert Amid Sophie Cunningham’s ‘Frustration’

Novelist slams WNBA boss Cathy Engelbert after Sophie Cunningham voices frustration over leadership priorities amid exit rumors.

WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert is facing intense public backlash after critical remarks from Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham about the league’s priorities.

A prominent novelist chimed in on the growing rift, pointing out that Engelbert’s inability to maintain player support could lead to her exit.

The storm originally kicked off when Cunningham spoke out, stating she was against trans athletes being allowed to compete in women’s sports. That single statement sparked organized protests and rallies outside arenas in multiple cities.

In the midst of this, Engelbert is finding herself in increasingly hot water. The frustration building across the league is becoming impossible to ignore.

Even after establishing a task force to address rising tensions, the front office hasn’t made any real progress.

More recently, however, Cunningham switched her focus away from the outside debate and aimed her critique straight at the league’s front office.

Talking about the state of WNBA leadership, Cunningham openly questioned whether Engelbert’s vision matches where the players want to take the sport.

Hinting that the commissioner’s tenure might be drawing to a close, the 30-year-old player admitted, “So I do feel like, as a whole, that could be a position that’s maybe open at the end of the year, but that’s not my call.”

With reports swirling that 2026 could mark Engelbert’s final season as commissioner, people have taken notice of the widening divide. Prominent novelist M.A. Rothman weighed in on the fallout, pointing out that Cunningham “isn’t hiding her frustration with league leadership.”

He also wrote, “Her own players won’t defend her. That’s the real verdict.”

Cunningham went on to stress that the league desperately needs someone willing to push boundaries rather than play it safe, saying:

“You do have to have a person in power who is bold, who is confident, who wants the best for the players and not maybe for themselves all the time.”

Calling for a boss who shares the locker room’s drive, she added, “With where our league is trying to go, I feel like you just want someone who also wants that.”
