Ten days ago, the Indiana Fever sat at 5-5, and there was plenty of blame to go around. Superstar Caitlin Clark and head coach Stephanie White were both criticized, particularly after their heated sideline exchange went viral.
Now, after a recent hot streak, the team has rolled off three consecutive wins. However, Clark is still facing criticism, and Pro Basketball Hall of Famer Isiah Thomas is the latest to offer his take on Clark and where she needs to improve.
Hall-of-Famer Isiah Thomas Wants Caitlin Clark to Improve as a Leader
Thomas was a legendary point guard who helped the Detroit Pistons win two NBA championships. On Tuesday, Thomas sat down with analyst Jason Whitlock to discuss Clark and her leadership.

“Being a great player and being extremely talented, and being a great leader, those two don’t always go hand in hand,” explained the 12-time NBA All-Star. Throughout the first quarter of this WNBA season (and all throughout her career), there have been instances of Clark flashing her temper at coaches and opponents.
For instance, the argument between Clark and White buttressed Thomas’ assertions. It spawned articles and opinion pieces about Clark’s maturity, coachability, etc.
“Leadership skills and basketball skills are two totally different things. They’re not the same. Now, leadership skills and basketball skills, when they connect, that’s when you have unbelievable magic that happens in a basketball team chemistry-wise,” Thomas continued.
“Can Caitlin continue to develop and work on her leadership skills? I believe she can get better at that. Will she get better at that? That’s what we all are watching. In her third year, we can say, ‘We expected a little bit more, but right now, we’re not getting it.’ We’re not asking more from you as a basketball player, we’re asking more from you as a leader.”
While Thomas spoke about what he sees from Clark on the court, no one truly knows what kind of leader Clark is behind the scenes when cameras aren’t on her. Also, there are different types of leaders, as some prefer to lead by example rather than being vocal.
On the court, Clark ranks among the WNBA’s best players. Averaging 20.3 points per game, Clark is the league’s fourth-highest scorer. On top of that, only the Phoenix Mercury star Alyssa Thomas’ 8.1 assists per game surpasses Clark’s 7.8. Clark is capable of creating for herself and others while running Indiana’s offense. Currently, the Fever sits in third place in the Eastern Conference behind only the New York Liberty and Atlanta Dream.
Thomas clearly believes that the 24-year-old still has room to improve from a leadership and maturity standpoint, but only time will tell whether she will.
