Enes Kanter Freedom’s decision to declare himself a WNBA prospect set off a wave of reactions across the sports and political world on Friday, and one former NBA champion made sure his voice was part of it. Andrew Bogut did not need many words to make his point.
His response came quickly after Kanter Freedom’s announcement began circulating online.
What Did Andrew Bogut Say About Enes Kanter Freedom’s Announcement?
Bogut, who won an NBA championship with the Golden State Warriors in 2015, responded directly to Kanter Freedom’s post on X with a short message of support.
“Good luck [Enes Freedom] in your new journey,” Bogut wrote.

The comment added a notable name to a growing list of current and former athletes and commentators weighing in on Kanter Freedom’s announcement. The former NBA center, who last played in the league in 2022, posted a video on Friday declaring himself eligible for the 2027 WNBA Draft.
This comes as a challenge to the league after weeks of controversy surrounding Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham’s comments on transgender athletes in women’s sports.
Riley Gaines called the move “genius” and “perfect,” while others online dismissed it as an attention-seeking stunt that trivialized a serious issue.
The WNBA Players Association issued a statement Friday addressing the broader debate without naming Kanter Freedom directly, saying the union embraces “justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion” and condemning what it called attempts to use the league to advance personal agendas.
Kanter Freedom, for his part, has maintained that his announcement is not intended to mock anyone, insisting in his original post that he simply wants the WNBA’s stated rules on self-identification applied consistently.
The former center’s comments arrive during a summer when the participation of trans athletes has come under question. The likes of Cheryl Reeve and Gabby Williams have spoken out in support of trans athletes, while Cunningham’s Fever teammate Caitlin Clark has remained neutral and chosen to stay out of the debate.
It would be interesting to see if Kanter Freedom follows through on his announcement and ends up playing in the WNBA. It isn’t the first time he has spoken about playing in the WNBA.
Back in 2023, Kanter Freedom suggested that he could “put on a wig, identify as a woman and start dominating the WNBA.”
That comment drew widespread reaction at the time, and it also led to a Fox News appearance in which he claimed he could average 60 points and 30 rebounds per game if allowed to play.
