Lexie Hull’s Fiancé Will Matthiessen’s Career Showdown
Matthiessen was born on Jan. 9, 1999, in West Linn, Ore., the middle of Julie and Conrad Matthiessen’s three children. Raised in a family that loved sports — his grandfather played soccer and rugby at Yale, and his grandmother played tennis — he tried everything from fishing and golf to skiing, but baseball was his calling.
At West Linn High School, he became one of Oregon’s best recruits, ranking No. 5 in the state by the time he was a senior. At a height of 6’6″, Matthiessen had impressive statistics that earned him “Best Male Athlete” in his league as a right-handed hitter. He graduated in 2018 with a scholarship to Stanford, where he encountered a fellow Cardinal athlete, Hull.
At Stanford, Matthiessen studied management science and engineering while serving as the Cardinal’s first baseman. In his junior year in 2019, he hit 0.305 over 252 plate appearances with 91 hits, 19 home runs, and 75 RBIs (runs batted in).
His all-around performance earned him recognition as a finalist for the John Olerud Award (best two-way college baseball player of the year) and ABCA All-American third team honors.

Over the summer of 2019, he honed his skills and position in the Cape Cod Baseball League’s top-level competition. He recorded good stats as a hitter and flaunted his merits as a pitcher for the Bourne Braves.
In June 2019, Matthiessen’s collegiate success paid off when the Pirates favored him in the sixth round of the MLB Draft. Over five seasons in the Pirates’ minor league system, he rose from Class A to Double-A. On top of that, not only did he rack up 197 hits but also scored 33 homers and 157 RBIs.
Despite being one of the top recruits for his team, Matthiessen’s fortune took a steep downward turn as he faced recurring injuries. His vulnerability to strikeouts also added to his setback, ultimately limiting his rise to the majors. By late 2023, after a series of shoulder and knee setbacks, Matthiessen decided to call it quits and retire from professional baseball.
Post-baseball, Matthiessen leveraged his management science and engineering degree and network to enter the finance world. He spent six months as a venture associate at Commonwealth Impact Investment before joining Sapient Capital as an analyst in mid-2024.
Hull and Matthiessen’s Relationship Timeline
Matthiessen and Hull reportedly first crossed paths on Stanford’s campus in 2018, introduced through the athletic training center where both logged long hours honing their craft. Though they competed in different sports, Hull on the hardwood and Matthiessen on the diamond, their shared drive and academic majors (both pursued STEM-related degrees) fostered an immediate connection.
On Instagram during mid-April 2025, Hull posted a picture of her hand adorned with a decent diamond cut, followed by one ring emoji — the short but ecstatic way she was announcing their engagement. Soon, teammates like Caitlin Clark inundated the comments with celebratory emojis as a testament to the close and tight-knit culture in the Fever locker room.
The pair reportedly bought a house together recently in Indianapolis, marking a long-term commitment to constructing life together side by side. Although no wedding date has been made public, fans are already considering a summer 2026 wedding.
As Hull enters her third WNBA season — having been drafted sixth overall in 2022 by the Fever — Matthiessen will be her rock.
