Fever Star Sophie Cunningham Slapped With Massive Fine After Calling Out ‘Inconsistent’ WNBA Referees

Sophie Cunningham reveals she was fined again by the WNBA over her outspoken comments about referees amid growing league-wide frustration.

Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham has never been one to hold her tongue, and once again, it’s cost her. The fiery guard revealed on Tuesday’s episode of her new podcast, Show Me Something, that the WNBA hit her with yet another fine for comments she made about officiating in the league.

The penalty is the latest in a growing trend of players and coaches voicing their frustration over inconsistent refereeing this season.

What Did Sophie Cunningham Reveal About New Fine Over Comments on WNBA Referees?

Cunningham, joined by co-host and longtime friend West Wilson, didn’t shy away from the topic that’s been brewing for weeks: WNBA officiating. The Fever guard shared the behind-the-scenes moment when she learned about her latest fine of $1500.

“They email our GM and she pulls me aside… and she just smiled and goes, ‘Hey, they’re gonna fine you again,’” Cunningham said. “I even told them I credited them that their job was hard! I did say that and I said that I would not be good at it.”

This isn’t the first time Cunningham has been penalized for criticizing officiating. On the debut episode of her podcast, she had bluntly unleashed her frustrations, calling the referees inconsistent.

“If I was a ref, I know I would mess up all the time. Like, I’m not saying that your job is easy, but when it is a simple call right in front of your face multiple times, what are you doing? What are you doing?” she said.

“They’re just so inconsistent, like that’s one thing. If you’re on the other team, and you’re going to be fouling the s*** out of me, cool. But let me do it to you.

“I think players across the league, and new fans across the country are like, what is going on with the refs? And I’m like, ‘I don’t know.’ And you fining me $500 is not going to do s***.”

Cunningham’s outspokenness has made her a lightning rod in ongoing discussions about officiating in the WNBA.

The 28-year-old guard has gained a reputation for her fiery on-court presence and willingness to speak her mind off it. This isn’t the first incident to land her in the headlines this season.

In late July, she posted a viral TikTok lip-synching Sabrina Carpenter’s “Manchild,” pointing around a hotel room while writing “@ some refs” on the screen, a move that also drew a league fine.

How Do Cunningham’s Comments Reflect a Growing Frustration Across the WNBA?

Cunningham’s outspoken remarks echo a bigger problem across the league. Players and coaches have repeatedly questioned officiating standards this season, making her latest fine part of a broader trend.

During a recent game against the Seattle Storm, WNBA superstar Caitlin Clark was visibly frustrated, turning toward an official late in the first quarter and shouting, “You were right in front of her,” after what appeared to be a missed foul with the Fever clinging to a 17-15 lead.

Separately, Angel Reese has also made her feelings clear about officiating. After the Chicago Sky’s loss to the Minnesota Lynx on July 6, where the Sky attempted just eight free throws compared to the Lynx’s 17, Reese told reporters, “I don’t give a damn if I get fined because that s— is cheap, and I’m tired of this s—.”

Likewise, after a mid-July loss, Aces coach Becky Hammon left a press conference saying, “Tell me how much my fine is,” highlighting the growing tension between teams and referees.

Reports from ESPN indicate that stars from Clark and Reese, as well as veterans like Kelsey Plum and Natasha Cloud, have all questioned the quality and consistency of officiating this season at one point or another.

For Cunningham, though, the conversation has turned costly yet again. But if her comments and her podcast debut are any indication, a $1,500 fine won’t be enough to keep her quiet.
