It has been a wild few weeks for Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark, and the controversy around her has only grown. Clark is always at the center of attention in the WNBA, but the latest controversy has only intensified that spotlight.
Clark was involved in an altercation with Phoenix Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas, who was suspended for one game for “recklessly making contact with her fist.” That play, among others, has sparked controversy around Clark, and her fans have only intensified the situation.
Fever GM Amber Cox Fires Back at Caitlin Clark Fans
To top off that controversy surrounding Clark, she injured her back in the game on June 24 and returned on Wednesday night in a 106-92 loss to the Los Angeles Sparks. Clark scored just 9 points in 16 minutes and then missed the Fever’s 92-89 victory over the Mercury on Thursday night.
Thomas landed on top of Clark with her fist on her throat and has since received death threats. Fever coach Stephanie White and Clark have both discussed the hard fouls, but Clark’s fans still seem to be turning up the heat.
Clark’s fans have come to her defense and often view some of Clark’s on-court rivals as opponents. The latest to feel the wrath of Clark’s fans is Fever GM, Amber Cox.
One fan believes Cox is always “loud after a win” without Caitlin Clark. Cox fired back.
Nonsense. You know who is also happy after ANY win? CC. Because this is a team full of people who celebrate and care for one another and like all of them, she’s a great teammate.
We all cannot wait to have CC back on the court. Enough with this ridiculous narrative.

“Nonsense,” Cox replied. “You know who is also happy after ANY win? CC. This is a team full of people who celebrate and care for one another, and like all of them, she’s a great teammate. We all cannot wait to have CC back on the court. Enough with this ridiculous narrative.”
Some have taken the narrative too far, and it makes sense that Cox is tired of discussing it. Even prominent basketball figures have come to Clark’s defense.
When you’re a figure like Clark, especially in sports, you’re always going to have fans rooting against you; that’s just the nature of the beast. But with the media attention Clark gets and her fans defending her online, she’s becoming a polarizing figure on a stage we haven’t really seen from a female athlete.
Many give Clark credit for increasing the sport’s popularity, and she certainly deserves some, but there has to be a happy medium between Clark’s supporters and detractors. We certainly haven’t seen much of it.
Clark is putting together a very nice third season, averaging 20.5 points, 7.9 assists, and 4/0 rebounds per game. The Fever will take on the Las Vegas Aces on Sunday night at 9:00 p.m. ET, with the game airing on NBC.
The goal is for Clark to suit up and play.
