Fever Fans Demand WNBA To Rescind Caitlin Clark’s Tech As Sophie Cunningham, Marina Mabrey Face Major Punishment

Tensions rise after the Indiana Fever's win over the Sun, as fans react to updated WNBA rulings involving Caitlin Clark, Marina Mabrey, and Sophie Cunningham.

In what was supposed to be a statement win for the Indiana Fever, chaos took center stage. On June 17 the Fever notched their sixth win of the 2025 WNBA season with a commanding (88-71) victory over the Connecticut Sun.

Caitlin Clark poured in 20 points while Kelsey Mitchell added 17, but the headlines weren’t about the scoreboard but they were about the escalating on-court tensions that boiled over in the second half.

Now hours after the fiery matchup, a new wave of controversy has erupted regarding a report based on the punishments.

Fans Want Justice for Caitlin Clark Regarding Her Foul

According to a report by ESPN’s Alexa Philippou, the technical foul given to Connecticut’s Marina Mabrey has been upgraded to a Flagrant 2. However, the league has announced that no player suspensions will be issued.

While some fans see this as a fair middle ground, many believe the WNBA missed the mark, especially when it comes to Clark’s punishment.

During the third quarter, Clark was guarding Sun guard Jacy Sheldon when Sheldon appeared to swing her arm and poked Clark in the eye. Clark turned around only to be bumped again. Reacting instinctively, she extended her arms to create space.

That’s when Mabrey aggressively stepped in, delivering a shoulder to Clark that sent her sprawling to the floor. In the aftermath, Mabrey received a technical foul, Clark was also assessed one, and Sheldon was hit with a Flagrant 1 for the initial contact.

Many fans argue that Clark was unfairly penalized in the heat of a moment she didn’t initiate. They believe her technical foul should be rescinded, especially given the new update that Mabrey’s contact has now been deemed a Flagrant 2.

“Rescind CCs technical or else,” wrote one fan, whereas another one said, “They need to rescind Caitlin’s tech.

With under a minute left in the fourth quarter, Sheldon went up for a layup. Fever forward Sophie Cunningham came up from behind, grabbing Sheldon’s hair and pulling her hard to the floor. While shocking, some fans viewed Cunningham’s actions as vigilante justice for Clark being blindsided earlier.

“If the league doesn’t do anything to protect CC from those jealous and cowardly girls, then Sophie does the job the league should do. I’m sure Jacy will think twice before dirty play again,” wrote one fan.

A Flagrant 2 foul typically results in an automatic ejection, but because Mabrey’s penalty was upgraded after the game, she escaped that immediate consequence. Now, fans want the WNBA to go further, calling for suspensions and stricter accountability.

“Suspend Mabrey for five games,” wrote another user.

While most fans were quick to criticize Mabrey for her aggressive hit on Clark, one fan took a different route, shifting the blame to the officiating crew. According to this viewpoint, the officials failed to control the game.

“Maybe the refs should be fined or suspended for letting the game get out of hand?” said the user.

While Fever fans celebrate a hard-earned win, the mood around the league remains tense. The WNBA may have issued its rulings, but for many, justice still feels far from served.
