‘Destroying Free Speech and American Culture’ — Analyst Rips Angel Reese, WNBA for Sandy Brondello’s Suspension

Jason Whitlock blasts the WNBA and Angel Reese after Sandy Brondello's 1-game suspension for controversial remarks during Dream-Tempo clash.

The WNBA drew a hard line regarding how players can be discussed, and the disciplinary fallout ignited a debate over the league’s culture.

Toronto Tempo head coach Sandy Brondello was handed a one-game suspension after her controversial remark about Atlanta Dream forward Angel Reese during their matchup on Friday. She referred to Reese as a “protected species,” which is an Australian term meaning she received special treatment from the refs.

The swift punishment drew fire from prominent critic Jason Whitlock.

Brondello issued a comprehensive public apology, taking full responsibility for her words and acknowledging the impact her phrasing may have had.

Reese addressed the media before Atlanta’s game against the Chicago Sky to close out the controversy, delivering a clear message about the league’s environment moving forward.

“I appreciate Sandy’s apology, but I also appreciate the love and support that I’ve had for the last 48 hours,” Reese said. “… There is no place for discrimination or hate in this league from anyone, from fans to coaches to players. And I’m just grateful that we are able to move on from the situation and just play winning basketball.”

While the Dream forward’s comments moved toward reconciliation, sports media personality Whitlock got blunt on the WNBA’s culture and suggested the punishment was a massive overreaction.

“Centering the emotions and sensibilities of feminist women is destroying free speech and American culture,” Whitlock posted. “The WNBA is normalizing cultural standards that are unsustainable. Apologies and suspensions because Angel Reese has the vocabulary and logic of a child.”

The controversy began during a physical Friday night matchup in which the Dream routed the expansion Tempo 111-92.

Late in the fourth quarter, Tempo forward Nyara Sabally went down with an injury after making contact with Reese, resulting in a foul call against Sabally.

Brondello erupted at the officials on the sideline, and broadcast microphones picked up the Australian coach arguing with referee Toni Patillo, stating that Reese is a “protected species” who receives preferential treatment.

Though the phrase carried wildly different meanings across continents, the WNBA suspended Brondello for one game without pay, forcing her to miss Monday’s game against the Las Vegas Aces.

Whitlock has built a brand on dishing out polarizing takes across the sports industry, and his latest comments come at a time when players are demanding action from the league to protect them from abuse both on the hardwood and online social media platforms.
