The basketball franchises in Dallas have had some incredible luck over the last six months.
After the Dallas Wings won the lottery and earned the right to a generational prospect in Paige Bueckers, the Dallas Mavericks went a step further, winning with a 1.8% chance and drafting another generational prospect in Cooper Flagg.
Right after getting drafted, the Duke product didn’t waste much time in supporting Dallas’ other franchise, making his way to the American Airlines Center to take in the action between the Wings and the Indiana Fever.
His presence, along with the comments from superstar Paige Bueckers, was a clear sign of the solidarity between the two franchises.
Dallas’ Two First Overall Picks – Cooper Flagg and Paige Bueckers
Bueckers made her way to the WNBA as one of the best prospects out of the collegiate circuit, immediately tallying 17.7 points and 5.8 assists while shooting a solid 45.7% from the field through the first 12 games of her career.
As a member of the UConn Huskies, she had an exceptional career where she won a national championship while snagging College Player of the Year trophies alongside unanimous All-American selections. With a resume littered with accolades, Bueckers is one of the most accomplished college athletes.
But she isn’t the only first overall pick in a 2025 draft in Dallas anymore. Cooper Flagg, widely expected to go first overall, also joined the Mavericks this past week after an incredible run with the Blue Devils.
At Duke, he led the program in every statistical category last season, with averages of 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 1.4 blocks and steals apiece. Seen as a true generational prospect, the Mavericks are expecting to build a contender around him.
#Mavs rookie Cooper Flagg is in attendance for tonight’s #Wings game. I asked Paige Bueckers about the city of Dallas having two No. 1 overall picks:

Already, they have superstar talent like Klay Thompson and Anthony Davis on the roster, while Kyrie Irving, who was also in the crowd for Fever vs. Wings, rehabs from his torn ACL injury. However, before training for the Summer League officially gets underway, Flagg was ready to take in some Dallas basketball.
His support from the sidelines meant a lot to the Wings’ superstar rookie. Speaking to reporters, Mike Curtis of the Dallas Morning News caught her comments about the importance of having two number one overall picks in the city.
“I think it’s really cool, and it’s an exciting time for Dallas basketball. For us to all support each other, we want great things for the city and want to represent the city well. So, yeah, really cool.” Unfortunately, the result in this particular game did not go Dallas’ way.
Despite 27 points and six assists from Bueckers, the Wings ultimately came up short against the Fever, even as they rallied forward without Caitlin Clark, falling 94-86.
However, as a rookie, Bueckers is going to experience some growing pains before taking that leap to superstardom.
