After a chaotic free agency period, the Connecticut Sun find themselves at the beginning of a rebuilding period for the franchise. Losing both of their franchise players, Alyssa Thomas and Dewanna Bonner, to the Phoenix Mercury and the Indiana Fever (respectively) and DiJonai Carrington to the Wings, the Sun are looking for answers to replenish their roster.
The Sun also lost Natasha Cloud, who they acquired after a trade with the Phoenix Mercury, to the defending champions, the New York Liberty. Failing to keep most of their 2024 roster that made a deep run in the playoffs, Connecticut finds themselves in a spot they haven’t been in in a long time. The Sun has two first-round picks in this year’s draft, number seven and eight. For the eighth pick, one player comes to mind to draft.
Who Is Georgia Amoore?
Georgia Amoore is a star guard currently playing in Kentucky. She is one of the top guards in this year’s WNBA draft class. Amoore is a great scorer, averaging 19 points a game. She is also an efficient passer, averaging 6.9 points assists per game.
Before coming to Kentucky, she was also an excellent guard at Virginia Tech. When former Virginia Tech head coach Kenny Brooks announced that he was taking the head coaching job at Kentucky, Amoore decided to follow him.
Could Georgia Amoore Make An Immediate Impact?
Georgia Amoore is a very talented player. In the current state of the Connecticut Sun, Amoore could very well make an impact, as the Sun is entering a rebuilding period. Connecticut is looking for players who can score at a high level, and Amoore fits right into that category.
The Sun are looking to fill their roster spots with players that can keep the team competitive in the league, even though they have had a rough free agency period. Right now, the only “big name” that the Connecticut Sun has on their roster is guard Marina Mabrey.
Marina Mabrey averaged 11 points for the Sun in the 2024 season. It is worth noting that Mabrey also tried to leave Connecticut this offseason, but the Sun front office is adamant about keeping her around, as they see her as “a big part of the team’s present and future.” This could also affect Mabrey’s performance this season.
The upcoming season will be full of many “brand new” things for Connecticut, including a brand new head coach, a brand new coaching staff, and new players for the team.
Another thing to note during the free agency periods in the WNBA is which teams have state-of-the-art facilities. In the WNBA, having top-of-the-line facilities is a major selling point for players when they are looking for a new team to call home. Some teams, like Las Vegas, Phoenix, and Seattle, have NBA-equivalent facilities for their players. New York has also started to work on having its own facilities for its team.
Right now, they share facilities with the Brooklyn Nets. Connecticut is known not to have the best facilities in the league. A tweet went viral this past season, stating that the Sun was practicing at a local community center. One half of the gym held the Sun’s practice, while the other half was used for a “community center event.”
Whichever team Amoore is drafted to, they are sure to get a player who makes an impact immediately on their team, whether starting or coming off the bench.
