The Connecticut Sun may be grappling with challenges on the court, but off the court, one of their newest stars is facing a very different kind of battle. After a rough preseason opener in which the Sun fell 79-59 to the Seattle Storm on May 4, despite solid scoring from Tina Charles (13 points) and Haley Peters (11), attention has shifted to a digital drama involving Marina Mabrey.
Marina Mabrey Addresses TikTok Hack
In a surprising turn, the WNBA guard revealed that her TikTok account had been hacked, and the hacker demanded money in exchange for its return.
Mabrey used the same platform where the breach occurred to share the alarming news. In a video posted from her TikTok account, she appears calm but clearly frustrated while getting ready for Connecticut’s media day.
“Hi friends, my TikTok got hacked. But I’m gonna post this on my real page once I get it back, if I ever get it back. … I’m gonna make a separate video on what happened with my TikTok, he’s like literally blackmailing me. He’s like texting me, ‘You can have your page back if you pay me this money,'” said Mabrey in the video.

Mabrey also shared a screenshot of her conversation with the alleged hacker, which reveals the blackmailer demanding $1,500 in exchange for access to her account. It’s a disturbing reminder of how athletes, like anyone else, can become targets of cybercrime.
The video addressing the hack was posted from the same account that had been compromised, suggesting Mabrey has since regained control
While it’s unclear whether she paid the ransom or found another way to reclaim the account, she seems relieved to be back online. In the comment section of the post, Mabrey replied to a fan, saying, “Yes, omg I was so sad,” indicating how upset she was about the hack and how much the account meant to her.
While the Sun focuses on tightening their game ahead of their last preseason game, Mabrey’s digital ordeal adds an unexpected off-court twist to their early narrative.
Mabrey’s Time With the Connecticut Sun
Mabrey joined the Sun last July in a high-profile trade. She and a 2025 second-round pick were sent to Connecticut, while the Chicago Sky received guards Rachel Banham and Moriah Jefferson, a 2025 first-round pick, and the right to swap 2026 first-rounders.
She quickly made an impact, averaging 14.9 points, 3.4 assists, and 3.5 rebounds per game in her debut season. With her shooting and playmaking, Mabrey became vital to the Sun’s offense. Heading into 2025, Connecticut is counting on her consistency and toughness once again.
Though she sat out the preseason opener against Seattle with a calf injury, ESPN’s latest injury report no longer lists her. That clears the way for a potential return in the Sun’s final preseason game against the New York Liberty on May 9.
