Who Owns the Chicago Sky? Team History, Franchise Valuation, and More

The emerging powerhouse in the WNBA’s Chicago Sky is known for its community engagement and business moves. The popularity of the franchise isn’t just reliant on its on-court performance, but on the team’s spirit and soul.

They’ve carved out quite a place in the league with their grit, passion, and strong sense of identity. And, to top it all, they’ve done it without being tied to any major NBA franchise. Time and again, they’ve proved that independent teams like theirs can thrive on their own terms.

Let’s take a brief look at their history, valuation, popular players throughout history, and more.

Who Owns the Chicago Sky?

Michael J. Alter is the principal owner of the Sky. He’s held this position since the team’s inception in 2005. He’s also the president of the Alter Group, a prominent name in the commercial real estate business.

Under his leadership, the franchise has operated independently, differentiating itself as one of the most competitive teams in women’s basketball.

NBA legend Dwyane Wade is also part of the same ownership group.

Serving as the operating chairman and a co-owner, Nadia Rawlinson is a Silicon Valley veteran who plays an integral role in strategic decision-making for the entire franchise.

Chicago Sky: Estimated Valuation

In the past few years, the Sky has seen a major increase in valuation. This increase is directly proportional to the growth we’ve all witnessed in the world of women’s sports, especially basketball.

In 2023, the team’s valuation increased to $85 million after the sale of a 10% stake to new investors like Laura Ricketts, Mary Dillon, and Tina Tchen.

By 2024, this valuation increased even more, reaching $95 million, making Chicago the second-most valuable team in the league.

A Journey Through Chicago Sky History

The Sky franchise took its baby steps in 2005, when then-NBA Commissioner David Stern announced that Chicago would get its own WNBA franchise. In the following days, former NBA player-turned-coach Dave Cowens became the team’s first head coach and general manager of the franchise.

In the initial few years, it was hard for the Sky to win games, but slowly, they started building their core, and the momentum began to shift in the 2010s. Excelling players like Elena Delle Donne joined the franchise, leading them to their first finals appearance in 2014.

Of course, they didn’t stop there. Their real breakthrough came in 2021, when Candace Parker led the team to its first WNBA championship. An electric run that will go down in history for everyone.

Since then, the Sky have been known for their grit and competitiveness.

Chicago Sky Key Players

Many standout players have been part of the rich history of the Sky. Some of them are:

  • Sylvia Fowles
  • Elena Delle Donne
  • Courtney Vandersloot
  • Allie Quigley
  • Kahleah Copper

These players have not only left an indelible mark on the Sky franchise but have also contributed significantly to the growth and popularity of the WNBA.

Added to these brilliant names is Angel Reese. The popular 2024 rookie sensation was drafted as the seventh overall pick. She’s led the league by a storm with her playmaking abilities, ball handling, and, of course, her fashion choices. The Bayou Barbie has led the Sky to new heights.
