The WNBA All-Star Game reserves were officially announced on Sunday to go alongside the 10 starters, and some Minnesota Lynx players may be feeling shortchanged.
Minnesota, currently atop the WNBA standings with a startling 17-2 record, will have just two players heading to the event, which left their head coach, Cheryl Reeve, a little peeved.
Reeve, considered one of the league’s most respected coaches and executives, expressed her feelings after a handful of potential Lynx stars were snubbed this week.
Cheryl Reeve Critical of Voters After Napheesa Collier and Courtney Williams Only Lynx Players Selected for ASG
Reeve’s Lynx team was outstanding last season, finishing with a 30-10 record, the second-best in the league. Minnesota was just one win away from winning their fifth championship, eventually losing out to the New York Liberty in the deciding Game 5 championship game.
The Lynx have set the pace this year, losing just two of their 19 games so far. They have allowed a league-best 74.1 points against their opponents and have a perfect 11-0 record at home. Therefore, the organization may have the right to be upset that only two players, Napheesa Collier and Courtney Williams, were named to this year’s All-Star Game.
Following the Lynx’s 17th win of the season on Sunday night against the Chicago Sky, Reeve made it a point to call out the voters after several of her players were denied a spot at the coveted event.
“I don’t know why only Phee and Courtney are All-Stars when you have the best team in the league by a few games. There are teams that are below us in the standings by a lot that have three All-Stars,” said Reeve. “Really disappointing … but we are disappointed in the coaches’ voting with regards to their selections for All-Stars.

Reeve pointed out that in the past, teams that were first in the rankings usually had three or four players on the roster.
Last season, the Liberty went into the All-Star break with the best record. Breanna Stewart, Sabrina Ionescu, and Jonquel Jones were all named to the All-Star team.
Reeve has reason to be upset, particularly when it comes to Kayla McBride. The 33-year-old guard has been outstanding this year, recording 14.9 points, 2.3 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.1 steals. She is shooting an impressive 43.3% from the field and nearly 40% from behind the arc.
A strong case could also be made for Alanna Smith. The 6’4″ Australian forward showed promising signs in 2024 and continues to improve. This season, she is averaging 10.1 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.9 assists over 18 starts.
The WNBA All-Star Game voting format allows players, fans, and a media panel to submit their picks. Collier and Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark were selected as team captains for this year’s showdown after finishing at the top of the fan voting polls.
