‘Under No Circumstances Do I Think Men Should Play Against Women’ — Charles Barkley Doesn’t Mince Words As WNBA’s Trans-Athlete Debate Boils Over

Charles Barkley weighs in on the WNBA’s transgender athlete debate, making his position clear on the heated controversy.

Charles Barkley rarely holds back from a controversial sports debate, and this time, he has weighed in on an issue that continues to divide the WNBA and the wider sports world.

As the transgender athlete debate intensifies, the NBA legend has made his position unmistakably clear. His blunt remarks come at a time when the W is facing mounting scrutiny over its eligibility rules and how it plans to address the issue.

Charles Barkley Enters WNBA Transgender Athlete Debate With Strong Message

The transgender athlete debate took an unexpected turn earlier this month when former NBA player Enes Kanter declared his intention to join the 2027 WNBA Draft. Royce White later made a similar declaration, drawing even more attention to the league and its rules regarding transgender eligibility.

Kanter grabbed headlines again on Sunday when he sat courtside for the Indiana Fever-Chicago Sky game. Late in the third quarter, he got into a heated verbal exchange with Sky guard Natasha Cloud and was eventually ejected.

On Monday, Barkley addressed the confrontation on the Michael Smerconish show and offered his thoughts on the broader transgender athlete debate.

“I always support the gay community. I always support the transgender community. I got nothing but love and respect for gay people and transgender people, but under no circumstances do I think men should play against women. Zero! I’m disappointed in Adam Silver and Cathy [Engelbert], the [WNBA] commissioner,” the former NBA MVP said.

“… They should have come out two weeks ago before all this. The people are looking for attention now.”

Barkley’s comments come roughly two weeks after WNBA Commissioner Engelbert and team executives met to discuss the issue that has divided the league. The meeting, however, did not publicly settle the question of whether Kanter or White would be eligible for the draft.

Under the CBA, “only players who are women are eligible to play in the WNBA.” However, “women” isn’t defined uniformly, allowing Kanter and White, who identify as women, to argue for their eligibility to play in the WNBA.

That lack of a clear definition has become the biggest part of the debate. Barkley believes Engelbert should have taken a more definitive position rather than allowing the issue to continue playing out publicly.

Front Office Sports reported on Monday that the WNBA has ruled both White and Kanter ineligible. The league and Engelbert, however, have yet to publicly confirm or deny that decision.

For now, Barkley’s comments add another prominent voice to a debate that the WNBA has yet to definitively settle. Until the league clarifies its eligibility rules, questions surrounding the issue are unlikely to disappear.
