Caitlin Clark had every reason to be angry after the heated game against the Connecticut Sun, and she didn’t hide it. After taking a hard shove from Marina Mabrey, watching a teammate get ejected, and hearing nothing but questions about foul calls, the Indiana Fever superstar had enough.
But instead of escalating the drama, Clark pushed back in her own way during the postgame press conference. With tension still hanging in the air, she turned the conversation toward winning, giving a clear message: talk basketball or not talk at all.
Caitlin Clark Angrily Shifts Focus from Scuffle to Commissioner’s Cup Push
Tuesday’s Fever vs. Sun matchup was one of the most physical WNBA games of the season till now, and Clark was right in the middle of the storm. In the third quarter, Sun’s guard Mabrey shocked fans when she forcefully shoved Clark, prompting a brief on-court confrontation.
Both Clark and Mabrey were assessed technical fouls, while Connecticut’s guard Jacy Sheldon received a flagrant foul during the same play for her role in escalating the moment.
Just one quarter later, tensions boiled again. Sun’s guard Sheldon took a hard drive to the rim and was sent crashing to the floor by Fever forward Sophie Cunningham.
Officials reviewed the contact and ruled it a flagrant-2, leading to Cunningham’s immediate ejection and an outburst of fan outrage both on the ground and online.
But after the final whistle, the drama took a new turn. During Fever’s postgame press conference, a reporter opened by asking about the technical fouls. Before Clark could speak, Fever head coach Stephanie White jumped in.
“It’s a league-wide issue. Bad officiating is bad officiating,” White said. “Everyone is getting better, but the officials.”
the media was completely silent after asking the flagrant foul question and caitlin had to say “you guys came for basketball, let’s talk about basketball, come on now. we’re heading to the commissioner’s cup, that’s pretty exciting.” 😭 staff had to say ask about the game too 😭 pic.twitter.com/pihtT7Pel5

That set the tone. While Coach White didn’t hold back in criticizing what she saw as inconsistent calls, Clark remained silent, visibly angry and dejected. She avoided fueling controversy and instead delivered a quiet mic-drop moment when reporters circled back to the flagrant foul.
“You guys came for basketball, let’s talk about basketball, come on now,” Clark said. “We’re heading to the Commissioner’s Cup, that’s pretty exciting.”
Clark’s response, while stinging, was a message in itself. She wouldn’t let physical plays or poor calls define her narrative. Her pivot away from controversy and toward basketball was met with silence and then nods. Clark clearly didn’t appreciate the focus staying on foul calls while her team was in the middle of turning its season around.
Meanwhile, Clark again delivered a stellar performance on the court and added 20 points to her team’s 88-71 victory. She seemed to have started where she had left in the previous game against the league’s top team, New York Liberty, where she lit the scoreboard with 32 points.
Clark and Co. will again step into the spotlight on Thursday, June 19, against the newly minted Golden State Valkyries, who are seventh in the Western Conference. Also with the win against the Sun, the Fever have advanced to the Commissioner’s Cup Final, which will tip off on July 1, 2025, against the Minnesota Lynx.
