Caitlin Clark didn’t play on Wednesday night, but she still found herself right in the middle of the action. The Indiana Fever star took on a new role as her team prepared to face the Washington Mystics on Wednesday, May 28, and let’s just say she took that role a little too seriously.
Even from the sidelines, Clark’s passion was clear, and a moment at halftime showed just how involved she was, leaving fans curious about what went down.
Clark Fires Up the Game From the Sidelines
Wednesday’s contest marked the Fever’s first game without their star rookie, Caitlin Clark, who is nursing a left quad strain. But even though she couldn’t play, Clark still traveled with the team to Baltimore’s CFG Bank Arena and clearly wasn’t just a passive spectator.
With the Fever struggling offensively in the first half, putting up just 40 points, Clark’s absence on the floor was obvious. Her playmaking, energy, and leadership were missed. But off the court, she was very much engaged. She was seen coaching her teammates from the bench, staying vocal, and doing everything she could to support the squad. But things got more intense at halftime.
As the teams exited the court for the break, cameras caught Clark animatedly speaking with officials. The Mystics held a slim 44-40 lead, but Clark appeared more focused on the officiating than the scoreline. She was visibly frustrated, and though the exact topic of her complaint wasn’t made clear, the video, shared by Yahoo Sports, showed that she wasn’t holding back.

Before the game, it was revealed that Clark had been asked to sit near the coaching staff during the game to gain a new perspective. Head coach Stephanie White explained that this setup was intentional, calling it “an opportunity to look at it a little bit more from a coach’s perspective.” Well, it seems Clark took that role to heart.
Clark Injury Updates – Fever Star Could Miss Four Games
The injury Clark suffered during Indiana’s loss to the New York Liberty on May 24 has her sidelined for at least two weeks. She’s dealing with a left quad strain, which can take some time to heal fully. The current expectation is that she’ll miss four games — against Mystics, Connecticut Suns, Mystics again, and Chicago Sky – but that could change depending on her progress.
For now, there’s no official word on her return, but Clark isn’t letting the injury slow her down mentally. Instead, she’s finding other ways to stay connected with teammates, coaches, and fans.
Before going down, Clark was off to a strong start in her sophomore season, averaging 19 points, six rebounds, and 9.3 assists per game through four outings. Those are impressive numbers, but what’s even more impressive is how she’s handling this setback with the same poise she brings to the court.
Fever Fall Short Against Mystics Without Clark on the Court
Without Clark in the lineup, the Fever struggled to find their rhythm. Indiana lost 83-77 to the Mystics in what turned out to be a historic night for DeWanna Bonner. She led the Fever with 21 points off the bench and became the first player in WNBA history to record 7,500 points, 3,000 rebounds, and 1,000 assists.
But even that milestone wasn’t enough to stop Washington. Brittney Sykes dropped 21 points for the Mystics and added nine rebounds and four assists to seal the win.
