The transgender issue has become a major cloud hanging over the entire WNBA. After Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham brought the debate into the spotlight, various other players, league members, and coaches have spoken out about the situation.
While no resolution has been reached, former NBA players like Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White are stirring up the debate, shedding light on the league’s inclusion policies by declaring for the 2027 WNBA Draft.
Now, a former two-time Super Bowl champion has spoken out about the growing drama.

Since Cunningham’s comments, the entire debate has blown into overdrive.
As various individuals offer their opinions on the situation, there hasn’t been a definitive answer about how the WNBA will proceed.
During the latest episode of the “Speakeasy” podcast, LeSean McCoy offered his two cents on the entire debate. For him, it was hard to deny the natural physical differences that existed between athletes of different genders.
“I’m just being careful with my words because everything in this world is so sensitive, but being around female basketball players, female athletes, and living 30-something years with all male athletes, there’s a big, big difference.”
Comparing women’s sports to men’s sports like football and boxing, Shady believed that a woman trying to compete with men in those sports would be dominated.
As a result, the Philadelphia Eagles legend extended the same logic to the WNBA as well.
“I want everybody to be free and comfortable with who they are, but certain things ain’t for that. And this sport is not for that. Because I’m telling you right now, any man that comes into that sport as a woman, they are going to dominate.”
Since the draft declarations by Kanter Freedom and White, WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert has sent a memo to teams about a task force comprising team presidents and general managers that will discuss the transgender issue.
“I know many of you have received questions in recent weeks regarding transgender athlete participation in women’s basketball, and I expect this topic will continue to receive significant attention,” Engelbert stated.
“I wanted to reach out to share how we are approaching these conversations at the league office and to thank those of you who have responded to questions from the media with thoughtfulness and professionalism,” she continued.
With the Collective Bargaining Agreement preventing the WNBA leadership from having a unilateral say on the matter, they’ll also need the Players’ Association’s approval.
