Both teams lived up to expectations, but Wilson’s heroics of 35 points, eight rebounds, and five assists helped Las Vegas reach the finish line in overtime and thereby reach the 2025 WNBA Finals. They will take on the Phoenix Mercury in a best-of-seven series starting Friday night.
During the post-match conversation, while Wilson voiced her happiness over the team’s triumph and reaching the WNBA Finals. She also shared her honest opinions on some other important and major points of discussion that happened recently involving Minnesota Lynx star forward Napheesa Collier and WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert.
Did A’ja Wilson Just Check the Commissioner Over Napheesa Collier’s Comments?
The news making rounds in the WNBA world stems from the recent conversation between Collier and Engelbert regarding the CBA. During the discussion, the Lynx superstar asked the Commissioner an intelligent question. In her latest press conference, Collier shed light on what transpired between her and Engelbert.
Collier said, “I also asked how she planned to fix the fact that Caitlin, Angel (Reese), and Paige (Bueckers), who are clearly driving massive revenue for the league, are making so little for their first four years.”
She added, “Her [Engelbert] response was that ‘Caitlin should be grateful she makes 16 million off the court, because without the platform that the WNBA gives her, she wouldn’t make anything’. In that same conversation, she told me that ‘players should be on their knees thanking their lucky stars for the media rights deals that I got them.'”

Reflecting on the entire episode, Wilson said, “I had an opportunity to listen to Phee [Collier] and I just want to say I was honestly disgusted by the comments that Cathy [Engelbert] made, but at the same time I’m very appreciative that we have people like Phee in our committee of our Players Association representing us.”
She added, “Because that’s what we’re gonna have to continue to make the push to stand it stand on what we believe in. And I’m grateful to have those type of people be able to continue to speak up for us and we’re, I’m gonna ride with Phee always because she knows obviously she’s a business girlie, and she has her own stuff going on but moving forward we got to continue to stand on business as we talk about this CBA negotiation.”
Wilson, a two-time WNBA champion and a four-time MVP, will be aiming to lead her team to the summit once again as they begin their quest towards the title with Game 1 of the finals scheduled to be played on October 3 at the Michelob Ultra Arena in Paradise, NV.
