The 2025 NFL season has quickly fallen by the wayside for Brock Purdy. After the San Francisco 49ers cleared a ton of cap space to give him a five-year extension worth $265 million, the hope was that he could shoulder a larger burden en route to bringing the team back to the playoffs.
However, so far this year, that hasn’t come to pass. While they remain firmly in the playoff race, most of that success has come without Purdy being in the lineup. As the second half of the season gets underway in Week 10, will the organization get its franchise quarterback back in the lineup?
Will Brock Purdy Play Against the Rams?
After beating them earlier in the year with Mac Jones, San Francisco has to be hoping they can pull off a similar feat in Week 10. According to the latest reports, Purdy was given a questionable status for the game.
However, soon after, they confirmed that the starting job would remain with Jones, as the former Mr. Irrelevant had yet to log a single full practice. First suffering a big toe injury in Week 1, he reaggravated the blow in Week 4.
Since then, he’s remained out of the lineup, with head coach Kyle Shanahan confirming his QB1 choice on Friday. “It will be Mac again starting. We haven’t decided whether to make (Purdy) active or not, but he’s further along this week than last week.”
That “further along” tag manifested itself in the form of more reps with the starting unit for Purdy, even though he wasn’t a full participant in practice. Thankfully, the 49ers have been able to sustain without him.
Jones, who has battled knee injuries himself, has gone 5-2 in his place, averaging 261.7 passing yards per game, while throwing 10 touchdowns and five interceptions, and ranking 14th on PFSN’s QB Impact.
Unfortunately, it is hard to believe that the same result can come to pass when San Francisco takes on the Los Angeles Rams. This time around, Sean McVay and his men are firing on all cylinders, and Matthew Stafford is slowly emerging as a front-runner for the MVP conversation.
Add in the injuries that have piled on for the 49ers beyond the blow to Purdy, and the situation is getting worse by the day for them. Last time around, defense was able to save the day for San Francisco.
But a plethora of injuries, most notably to the trio of Fred Warner, Mykel Williams, and Nick Bosa, have decimated their defensive line, which could amplify their problems further against the Rams.
