Why Is Rasul Douglas Still a Free Agent? Why the Super Bowl Champion CB Might Still Be Available

Veteran cornerback Rasul Douglas has been available on the open market for over a month and a half after becoming a free agent. He is entering his ninth season in the NFL and has been part of seven teams in the past eight years.

Why Is Rasul Douglas Still Unsigned?

Douglas was drafted in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles and had carved out a solid starting role for himself until the rough 2024 campaign. Douglas had 43 receptions on 59 targets for 518 yards and four touchdowns for a passer rating of 122.00 last season for the Buffalo Bills, and this poor performance has meant he is still a free agent.

Another concern for the teams about Douglas could be his age (30), but the blame largely lies on his performance. He, however, had a solid campaign in 2023. He had a passer rating of 38.6 and hauled in four interceptions across just nine games for the Bills.

Buffalo acquired Douglas and a fifth-round pick from the Packers for a third-round pick in October 2023. Douglas had played every defensive snap for Green Bay and had one interception, along with 32 tackles. He had 10 INTs in 36 games after signing with the Packers before the 2021 season.

While the poor 2024 campaign has left Douglas’ future hanging in the air, there’s every chance that he can get back to his productive self and become a reliable starter. The end of the 2025 NFL Draft has resulted in some teams showing interest in Douglas, and he might as well have been waiting for the draft to end to evaluate his playing time in different teams.

The Miami Dolphins are the likely team to sign Douglas and have been in contact with the veteran, as reported by Barr Jackson of the Miami Herald.

“The Dolphins have been in contact with Douglas, who started 15 games for the Bills last season, and have been showing some interest. He has had a good career, with 19 interceptions and 80 starts over nine seasons,” Jackson noted.

Miami only has two proven starting-caliber players: disgruntled Jalen Ramsey (whom the team is trying to trade) and Kader Kohou. If Ramsey is traded, Douglas would have a perfect starting opportunity to return to his productive ways.

Other experienced corners still available include Asante Samuel Jr., James Bradberry, Stephon Gilmore, and Shaquill Griffin, but it’s Douglas who stands out among the list and with the Dolphins lacking a reliable starter beyond Kohou, the 30-year-old could be a perfect addition on a short-term deal.
