Why Did Shavon Revel Slip Out of First Round in NFL Draft? Examining the East Carolina CB’s Injury Concerns

Shavon Revel slipped out of the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft, but why did the East Carolina cornerback not get picked yet?

One of the top names still waiting to hear his name called in the 2025 NFL Draft is East Carolina cornerback Shavon Revel — a player many experts pegged as a surefire first-round pick. Instead, he’s fallen into Day 2, with questions swirling around his long-term durability and availability at the next level.

Why Did Shavon Revel Slip Out of the First Round?

There’s no questioning Revel’s talent. At 6’0″ with smooth hips, sharp instincts, and proven production, he fits the mold of a modern NFL cornerback.

In just 24 career games, he tallied 70 total tackles, three interceptions, two defensive touchdowns (one pick-six, plus a fumble recovery for a score), and 15 pass breakups — numbers that point to a playmaker when he’s on the field.

But that’s the issue — staying on the field.

Revel’s injury history is extensive and concerning to NFL teams:

  • High School: Missed most of two seasons due to a fractured skull, broken nose, and later a broken collarbone.
  • Freshman year at ECU: Missed the first three games with a boxer’s fracture.
  • 2024 season: Suffered a torn ACL in practice and missed the entire campaign.

While some scouts view this as bad luck rather than chronic fragility, decision-makers were unwilling to take the risk with first-round draft capital. All this, despite Revel sending a personal health update to all interested NFL teams.

“He is on schedule for full return to play this summer,” Dr. Daniel E. Cooper wrote (via Yahoo! Sports). “When he reports to an NFL team after the 2025 draft, he will be cleared for all strength and conditioning activities and individual running and cutting drills as a defensive back. He will not be cleared for participation with the team until training camp. This is routine for the protocol after ACL reconstruction in football. Any of your trainers or team physicians can contact me for further discussions as needed.”

As Ian Cummings of PFSN noted, Revel was once mocked to the Minnesota Vikings at No. 24 — but injuries have a way of rewriting narratives.

At times, it feels as though Shavon Revel has fallen under the radar as other CB prospects rise. Revel hasn’t seen the field since a torn ACL sidelined him after three games in 2024, but he remains a viable first-round prospect and one of the class’ highest-ceiling CBs.

While Revel wasn’t able to test, he boasts a documented 4.4 40-yard dash and an 11′ broad jump from ECU’s camp last spring, and at 6’2″, 196 pounds, with near-33″ arms, his combination of length, explosiveness, speed, and agility amounts to unmatched potential.

Cornerback Value and the Financial Factor

It’s not just Revel. No cornerbacks went in the first round this year — a telling sign about how NFL teams viewed the position group overall. Even Michigan star Will Johnson, widely considered one of the top corners in the class, didn’t hear his name called.

First-round picks come with not just prestige but also financial implications — namely, the coveted fifth-year option. That makes durability even more valuable. With his medical red flags, Revel was simply too risky a proposition for teams looking to land plug-and-play contributors with long-term upside.

Revel is arguably the best defensive player still available heading into Day 2 of the draft. His tape shows a smart, aggressive cover corner with elite ball skills and the physical tools to match up with NFL wideouts. If he can stay healthy — a big “if” — he has the potential to become a high-end starter.

A team willing to take the gamble early in the second round could end up with a massive value pick. With medical clearance and time to develop, Revel could anchor a secondary for years to come.

Bottom Line: Shavon Revel’s draft slide says more about the NFL’s risk aversion than it does his talent. The moment he’s drafted, he becomes one of the most intriguing prospects to watch — and possibly one of the biggest steals of the 2025 NFL Draft.
