‘Why Are You Coming Back?’ — Kay Adams Questions Travis Kelce’s Decision After Latest Appearance With Taylor Swift

Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift attended a Cavaliers-Knicks game, prompting NFL analyst Kay Adams to wonder why he's suiting up this NFL season.

Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift recently sat courtside as Kelce’s hometown Cleveland Cavaliers faced off against the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference Finals.

Kelce and Swift have a looming summer wedding, and then the Kansas City Chiefs tight end will suit up again for what could be his final NFL season. But after Kelce and Swift’s appearance at the Knicks-Cavaliers game, NFL analyst Kay Adams can’t quite wrap her head around Kelce’s decision to continue playing for the Chiefs.

Kay Adams Questions Why Travis Kelce Is Returning To Football

After Kelce’s latest high-profile outing with Swift, Adams asked the question that plenty of observers have quietly wondered.

Watching Kelce chug a beer in front of Swift, all rowdy and happy, Adams couldn’t square this image with him soon preparing for another grueling NFL season.

“As I’m watching Travis chug beers and get drunk in these slouch chairs they have Cavs courtside, with his soon-to-be wife, I’m like, ‘Why?'” she said. “And I just started thinking, like, ‘Why are you coming back? You’re good. Go live. You could have anything you want. There are agencies… agents are bringing you deals. Like, why are you coming back?'”

After thinking about it, Adams landed on her own answer: Kelce must sense something left in Kansas City.

“It’s got to be he feels like they’ve got something,” she said. “I think I believe in that.”

Adams thinks Kelce is back for a “Last Dance” of sorts with Patrick Mahomes, Andy Reid, and Co.

“I believe this is it. I think this is probably it,” she said. “Does that play into this at all when it’s like, it’s our last run?”

“It’s Travis, this icon, this Hall of Famer, this larger-than-life thing,” she added. “He’s got to go get in shape. He’s got to go figure it out. Is there something to, like, let’s do this one time with Travis? I feel like that’s going to be in play this year.”

Why Travis Kelce Chose To Return For A 14th Season

Kelce settled the retirement rumors once and for all when he re-signed with the Chiefs on a three-year extension worth up to $57.735 million. However, it is structured this way to be cap-friendly; it’s essentially a one-year deal worth up to $15 million.

“I’m still in love with this game,” Kelce said on “The Pat McAfee Show“. “I still love going to work, putting on the pads, grinding it out and playing the game.”

Last season, Kansas City finished 6-11 and missed the playoffs for the first time in the Mahomes era. Kelce refused for this collapse to be his closing image. Chiefs general manager Brett Veach said the tight end made his intentions clear almost immediately.

“He basically said, ‘I’m not going out like this,'” Veach recalled. “We knew basically the day after our last game.”

Of course, Swift played a role here, too. Kelce credits his fiancée’s relentless drive as a motivator to keep chasing more. “We share the same love for what we do,” he told McAfee. “Seeing her have that love and joy in what she does, of course that’s a motivator. It definitely motivates me to say, ‘You know what? I’m not done either.'”

Kelce’s legacy is magnified by his numbers.

Kelce, an 11-time Pro Bowler and seven-time All-Pro selection, holds the record for most receiving yards by a tight end in a single season with 1,416. He’s one of just five tight ends to clear 10,000 career receiving yards.

The Chiefs open the 2026 season with a Monday night game against the Denver Broncos on September 14 at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.
