Who Is the Oldest NFL Team in 2025?

The Washington Commanders will have the oldest roster in 2025. In Week 1, Washington’s players were, on average, 28.6 years old.

Not only is this the oldest roster this season, but it’s the league’s oldest in nearly two decades. According to data from Sports Reference, it’s the oldest roster since 2007, since, ironically, Washington’s players were 28.7 years old.

The Commanders have structured their roster around proven veterans, many of whom have extensive starting and playoff experience. This wasn’t accidental. Despite being the oldest team, the Commanders went after age and experience to help their young, star quarterback and face of the franchise, Jayden Daniels.

Some offensive players who stand out are running back Austin Ekeler (30), wide receivers Deebo Samuel (29) and Terry McLaurin (30), tight end Zach Ertz (34), left tackle Laremy Tunsil (31), and right guard Nick Allegretti (29).

It’s not just the offense. The defense is highlighted by veterans all across the field, including linebackers Bobby Wagner (35) and Von Miller (36), Preston Smith (32), and cornerback Marshon Lattimore (29).

Being the league’s oldest team isn’t necessarily a weakness, as the Commanders now boast one of the most seasoned rosters in the NFL. That experience can show up in a variety of ways, from pre-snap reads to handling late-game pressure.

Of course, there are risks when carrying the oldest roster in the NFL. Injuries are more prevalent among veteran players, and recovery times are longer. Durability will be a potential concern for the Commanders this season.

For perspective, the youngest team in the NFL in 2025 is the Green Bay Packers at an average age of 25.8, their third straight year of holding that title.

The two teams faced off on Thursday Night Football in Week 2 with the Packers winning 27-18. While youth prevailed in this one, the Commanders are still one of the best teams in the NFL, coming off an NFC Championship appearance last season.

With the NFC as competitive as ever, composure and execution are critical, and the Commanders are banking on their veterans to deliver.
