1. New York Giants
Ryan Clark began his professional career when he signed with the New York Giants as an undrafted free agent on April 26, 2002.
He was released midseason and placed on the practice squad but returned in 2003, earning his first start in Week 7 against the Philadelphia Eagles. He finished the season with 21 tackles and a sack.
In 2004, the Giants waived him after signing veteran Brent Alexander.
2. Washington Commanders
Shortly after, on July 31, 2004, Clark signed a two-year deal with Washington. Injuries in the secondary gave him a shot to start alongside rookie Sean Taylor.
In 2004, Clark tallied 81 tackles in 15 games. The following year, he started 13 games and posted 57 tackles with a career-high three interceptions, helping Washington reach the playoffs and earn its first postseason win in seven years.
Despite that success, the team chose not to re-sign him, instead bringing in Adam Archuleta — a move later widely criticized.
3. Pittsburgh Steelers
On March 14, 2006, Clark signed a four-year deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers to replace Chris Hope. He won the starting free safety job next to Troy Polamalu and played in 13 games during the 2006 season.
In 2007, his season was cut short due to a medical emergency caused by the sickle cell trait, which led to the removal of his spleen and gallbladder.
Clark returned in 2008 and helped Pittsburgh win Super Bowl 43 over the Arizona Cardinals, contributing five tackles. He also played in Super Bowl 45, making eight tackles in a close loss to the Green Bay Packers.

He remained a starter through the 2013 season, but the Steelers opted not to bring him back, signing Mike Mitchell to take over in 2014.
On March 31, 2014, Clark returned to Washington for a second stint. After DeAngelo Hall’s injury, he was named defensive captain and recorded two interceptions that season, including one off Andrew Luck. He officially retired as a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers on Feb. 18, 2015.
