The Kansas City Chiefs hoped that their luck against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday would change after the Eagles beat the Chiefs 40-22 in Super Bowl LIX. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid and quarterback Patrick Mahomes desperately wanted to avoid an 0-2 start on the season.
However, that became a reality on Sunday as Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts and running back Saquon Barkley were too much for Kansas City. Philadelphia secured a 20-17 victory at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium. It was a bitter loss for the Chiefs.
When Was The Last Time Chiefs Started 0-2?
Kansas City fans probably didn’t want to look at their team’s history books to see when the Chiefs last started 0-2 in a season.

Well, that was all the way back in 2014 in Reid’s second year as Kansas City’s head coach.
The Chiefs ended up with a 9-7 record that season and missed the NFL playoffs. From 2006 to 2012, Kansas City started all those seasons at 0-2 and ended up with losing records in five of those six seasons.
After this 0-2 start, the Chiefs were the biggest fallers in terms of their postseason odds, dropping 19.2% after the Week 2 loss. They now have a 39.6% chance of making the playoffs this season, according to PFSN’s model.

The Eagles now join the Cincinnati Bengals as the only teams to beat Mahomes three straight times. Philadelphia is also the first team to beat Mahomes in three straight road/neutral site games. It’s two wins at Arrowhead Stadium and one in New Orleans.
Want another stat to think about? This is also the first three-game losing streak of Mahomes’ NFL career. When was the last time he lost three straight football games? You have to go all the way back to his time as the starting quarterback of the Texas Tech Red Raiders. He lost three straight back in November 2016.
Against the Eagles, Mahomes was 16-for-29 passing for 187 yards with one touchdown and one interception. He also had seven carries for 66 yards rushing and one touchdown. Travis Kelce had four catches for 61 yards and no touchdowns. Opposite the Chiefs, Hurts was 15-for-22 passing for 101 yards and no TD passes. Barkley had 22 carries for 88 yards and one TD.
Kansas City had high hopes for this season. While the campaign is still young, getting off to an 0-2 start will put a bad taste in the Chiefs’ mouths.
Entering Sunday’s game, Kansas City was an underdog. Now, the Chiefs have some serious things to think about before their next game. It’s going to be a long week for Chiefs Kingdom.
