How Much Will Andy Reid Play His Starters in the Preseason?

Andy Reid has a history of playing his starters in the preseason. In 2024, he said, “As far as the play time for this game, we’ll go the ones for a quarter, twos for the second quarter, threes the third quarter, and fours for the fourth quarter, and we’ll just keep it at that.”

He has yet to comment on his plans for this preseason, but he’s done this before. Generally, he will let his starters play part of the first quarter before getting pulled, then see their usage ramped up in the second game and play almost all of the first quarter. The third game seems to be reserved for sorting out final roster cuts while the starters all sit.

The Chiefs’ downfield passing game was a weakness in 2025. Despite their 15-2 record, the Chiefs had to rely on more short and intermediate passes. A host of injuries to the receiving corps limited quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ options.

Shades of 2024 appeared on July 29 when three Chiefs receivers popped up on the injury report after a scary day at practice.

Hollywood Brown had to be carted off the field after hurting his ankle.

Xavier Worthy hit his head on the ground while trying to make a play. However, he returned to practice.

Skyy Moore also left the field on a cart with a hamstring injury.

However, the news is not all bad. Training camp is still underway, and the regular season is still a month away, giving the Chiefs plenty of time to get their receiver room healthy and ready to go.
