Green Day will kick off Super Bowl 60 with a special opening ceremony at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. on Sunday, performing right in their Bay Area backyard before the New England Patriots face the Seattle Seahawks. Here is everything you need to know about when the band takes the stage, how to watch and who else is performing before kickoff.
What Time Does Green Day Perform at the Super Bowl?
The Super Bowl 60 opening ceremony featuring Green Day is scheduled to begin at approximately 6 p.m. ET (3 p.m. PT) on Sunday, Feb. 8, roughly 30 minutes before the game’s 6:30 p.m. ET kickoff. The performance will air live on NBC and stream on Peacock, with additional broadcasts on Telemundo and Universo.
The ceremony marks the 60th anniversary of the Super Bowl, and Green Day, made up of lead vocalist and guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong, bassist Mike Dirnt and drummer Tré Cool, will help usher generations of Super Bowl MVPs onto the field while performing a selection of their best-known hits. It is the band’s first Super Bowl broadcast performance.
“We are super hyped to open Super Bowl 60 right in our backyard!” Armstrong said in a statement when the performance was announced. “We are honored to welcome the MVPs who’ve shaped the game and open the night for fans all over the world. Let’s have fun! Let’s get loud!”
The NFL’s choice of Green Day carries a hometown connection. The trio formed in the East Bay in 1987 and emerged from the Bay Area punk scene at Berkeley’s famed 924 Gilman Street club.
Their 1994 major-label debut “Dookie” became one of punk rock’s defining albums, and the band has since sold more than 75 million records worldwide across a catalog that includes “American Idiot,” “Basket Case,” “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” and “Wake Me Up When September Ends.” The band was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2015.
