From wanting out of Miami to challenging Olympic sprinters to committing back to the Dolphins, it has been an eventful offseason for star receiver Tyreek Hill. 2024 marked the first season he failed to make the Pro Bowl, and as he looked to return to his productive ways in 2025, he hit an early snag and is likely to remain sidelined from the Dolphins’ preseason opener against the Chicago Bears.
Tyreek Hill Is Nursing an Oblique Injury
Hill was at his explosive best through the offseason and clocked lifetime best times over a few 100-meter sprints. He was practicing hard during the Dolphins’ training camp but has suffered an oblique injury, which has kept him sidelined for team drills this week.
The Dolphins head coach, Mike McDaniel, confirmed on Friday that Hill was dealing with health issues, claiming it was an overuse injury made worse because Hill “was taking every rep that was on the books.”
“Just for clarity purposes, he’s trying to practice and he’s working through an oblique that got worse because he was taking every rep that was on the books,” McDaniel told the media. “So the medical staff had to kind of jump in, and right now we’re trying to prevent it from being a lingering thing, but he is trying to sneak his way into every rep.
“He is at the height of his competitiveness right now. So we’ll see how we manage that. But I know he’s going all day if it’s up to him, and we’re gonna hold them back. We’ll see how much we can.”
Hill, who recorded a five-year low of 81 receptions for 959 yards and six touchdowns in 2024, had the last full practice on Tuesday when he ran three long patterns. He was absent on Wednesday but did some light practice on Thursday. Miami’s joint practice against the Bears on Friday went ahead without Hill, and he is also expected to miss the upcoming preseason matchup.

The eight-time Pro Bowler is also dealing with issues off the field, as his eight-month-old daughter, Capri, was recently hospitalized after what his estranged wife, Keeta Vaccaro, described as a “scary” incident.
While she did add that Capri was now “doing much better,” it’s understandable that Hill would be concerned about her health, and football won’t be the first thing on his mind.
With his competitive drive and game-breaking speed, Hill will be eager to get back on the field. But for now, the family is the first thing on his mind while the Dolphins prioritize his long-term health over a preseason appearance.
His status for the remainder of camp and Miami’s preseason slate will likely depend on how quickly he can recover from the oblique strain.
