What Happened to Rashee Rice? Latest on the Chiefs WR’s Injury Recovery and Looming Suspension

Here's the latest injury update on Chiefs WR Rashee Rice and why the Kansas City Chiefs held him out of their preseason opener on Saturday.

Rashee Rice worked tirelessly throughout the 2024 season to rehab a season-ending knee injury that he suffered in Week 4 against the Los Angeles Chargers. He was ready to get back into action during training camp, but suffered a setback when he suffered a groin injury.

He did not appear in the preseason game against the Arizona Cardinals, as he was held out for precautionary reasons. The Chiefs had no interest in risking Rice’s status further in a game that doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things.

How Serious is Rashee Rice’s Injury?

Fortunately for Kansas City, Rice’s groin injury was described as minor. Rice only missed a few days of practice and the preseason opener before returning to practice on Monday. He looked explosive in his return to the field, and Chiefs fans were excited about how he performed.

The Chiefs barely played their starters in their preseason opener. Patrick Mahomes only saw three snaps after the Cardinals muffed the opening kickoff, giving the Chiefs a short field on their opening drive. Rice wouldn’t have seen much action even if he was active, so he didn’t miss much.

Rice has been dealt a tough hand over the last year with his season-ending and groin injuries. Luckily, he has recovered from both injuries and is not expected to miss more time due to injury, barring any new setbacks. Rice is a dynamic playmaker for this Kansas City offense, and he was certainly missed last season.

While Rice might not be missing time for any injuries, he is facing a potential suspension for a car accident that occurred in April 2024. It’s unclear how long Rice will be suspended, but he will have a disciplinary hearing with the NFL on Sept. 30, meaning he will likely be available for Kansas City’s first four games. He is reportedly bracing for a suspension of four to six games.

It will be tough for the Chiefs to lose a talented receiver like Rice, but as last year showed, they had no problem winning games without him in the lineup. Of course, the Chiefs want him on the field, but this isn’t something they haven’t been through before.

The Chiefs are looking to bounce back from an embarrassing defeat in the Super Bowl to the Philadelphia Eagles. In that game, the offense was uncharacteristically stymied and flustered by the Eagles’ defense. Aiming for their 10th straight AFC West title, the Chiefs will have to get through a tough division with two playoff teams last season and the new-look Las Vegas Raiders.
