What Happened to Justin Fields? Breaking Down Why Tyrod Taylor Is Playing for the Jets in Week 7 vs. Panthers

Justin Fields was replaced by Tyrod Taylor in Week 7 game against the Carolina Panthers. Here's the latest on the Jets quarterback's status.

The New York Jets are still looking for an answer at quarterback. They’ve tried many different options, and the latest option, Justin Fields, isn’t getting it done for New York. Fields had a very rough Week 6 and didn’t have a good first half in Week 7. Fields had an injury scare in the first half, but finished the half. Now, Tyrod Taylor is opening the second half as the quarterback.

Why is Tyrod Taylor Playing?

Taylor is opening the half for the Jets in what is likely a coaching decision. Fields completed six of his 12 passes in the first half for only 46 yards.

He took a brutal sack at the end of the first half and knocked out any chance of points for the Jets before halftime.

He was bad this week and dreadful last week. Head coach Aaron Glenn has seen enough from Fields and called upon Taylor in the second half.

Fields has had a couple good games, but has largely struggled for New York. The loss to Denver was the pinnacle of his struggles as the Jets finished with negative passing yards.

The Jets finished the game with minus-10 net passing yards, the fewest by any NFL team in a single game this century. Fields was under constant pressure from Denver’s defensive front all day. His performance, which lacked a must-win urgency, will surely be under heavy scrutiny from the Jets’ fanbase.

Jets fans are waiting for an answer at the quarterback position. They’ve been waiting for a very long time, and many quarterbacks have tried and failed to deliver. Now, Fields is added to the long list of quarterbacks to have been benched for his struggles with the Jets. The Jets have seen plenty of their quarterbacks revive their careers elsewhere, like Geno Smith and Sam Darnold, but none succeeded for New York.

Fields’ role as the starter could be in question for next week. He was benched around six weeks into his 2024 season when he was with the Steelers, but that was because Russell Wilson was returning from injury. Now, he’s benched again and might not see himself given the start in the following weeks.

It is clear that the Jets will need to find a quarterback once again in the offseason. Fields has shown that he isn’t the answer for them. They are staring their seventh straight loss in the face and need some Taylor magic to overturn the two-possession deficit they are facing.
