What Happened to Shedeur Sanders, and Why Is Dillon Gabriel In? Latest on Browns Phenom’s Injury in Week 16 vs. Bills

An injury for Shedeur Sanders in the first half forced the Cleveland Browns to bring in Dillon Gabriel against the Buffalo Bills.

The Cleveland Browns have a huge decision to make in the final weeks of the year. While the march for Myles Garrett breaking the all-time sacks record and their potential spot in the 2026 NFL Draft are reasons for fans to tune in, they also have to figure out if Shedeur Sanders is their long-term solution at quarterback.

Unfortunately, facing the Buffalo Bills in Week 16, a rather reckless style of play from the second-generation quarterback ended terribly for him. Before the first half was over, he had to be taken off the field, with the Browns substituting Dillon Gabriel into the game.

What Happened to Shedeur Sanders?

An excellent opening drive paved the way for Cleveland to take an early 7-point lead. However, a dropped pass from Sanders allowed the Bills to force an interception that gave them the lead right back.

But on the next drive, Sanders was once again excellent as he pushed the Browns down the length of the field and into the red zone. It was a risky endeavour, though, as 35 of the total 65 yards that the team covered on the drive came as a result of Sanders scrambling for his life.

Finally, trying to make the completion for a touchdown from second and goal, he was hit hard, leading to a nasty cut on his finger. With immediate bleeding, he had to be taken off the field, while he also kept holding his nose for a potential injury.

As a result, Cleveland shifted Gabriel into the game on the third down opportunity. However, he was tackled behind the line of scrimmage, forcing his team to settle for a field goal and trail 13-10.

Thankfully, the injury to Sanders wasn’t a major blow. As Nate Ulrich of USA Today confirmed, “#Browns QB Shedeur Sanders just ran out of the locker room and is warming up.” On the next drive, he was back on the field and leading the Browns from under center.

Fantasy Impact With Sanders’ Injury

Sanders has been up and down in his short stint as an NFL starter. He had a huge game against the Titans, but otherwise has been underwhelming. But he was playing reasonably well to start this game and has been getting the ball to Harold Fannin Jr.

Even though Gabriel was taken ahead of Sanders, it’s pretty clear Sanders is the better player. A return to Gabriel would be a downgrade for Fannin and the offense, in general.
Quinshon Judkins has been utilized a lot early on, especially as a receiver.

That was not something we saw previously with Gabriel. Hopefully, Sanders is able to return.
