Former Florida State standout and New York Jets quarterback Jordan Travis officially announced his retirement from football due to lingering effects of a catastrophic leg injury suffered in college. Nearly one year after being signed to the Jets’ roster as an undrafted free agent, Travis revealed he was stepping away from the game for good.
“I feel like I did everything I could to come back,” Travis said in a heartfelt statement released by the Jets. “But my leg just isn’t where it needs to be to compete at this level. I have peace knowing I gave this game everything I had.”
Travis was expected to be a developmental prospect behind a crowded QB room in New York. His talent, however, made him one of the most intriguing undrafted pickups of the offseason.
Look Back at the Injury That Changed Everything for Jordan Travis
Travis’ career-altering injury came on Nov. 18, 2023, during a matchup against North Alabama. On what looked like a routine scramble, his leg twisted awkwardly under a defender. He was carted off the field in visible pain, and it was immediately clear the injury was serious.
Florida State rallied that day for their injured captain, but for Travis, the long road back had just begun.
He underwent surgery shortly after and stayed engaged with the team throughout their bowl run, even supporting teammates from the sideline with a cast on his leg. His leadership remained constant even when his body couldn’t keep up.
Travis’ Short-Lived NFL Chapter With New York Jets
Travis participated in a pro day and private workouts, despite having limited mobility. The Jets, intrigued by his potential and high football IQ, brought him in as a project player. Unfortunately, as offseason programs ramped up, Travis came to a sobering conclusion: The leg wasn’t healing fast or well enough.
Jets GM Joe Douglas said the organization stood by Travis’ decision. “Jordan is a competitor in every sense,” Douglas said. “Even when he wasn’t at 100%, he gave our building energy. We wish him nothing but the best in the next chapter.”
Despite his early retirement, Travis isn’t turning his back on the sport. Speaking to NBC Sports, he hinted at a future in coaching: “The game gave me everything. I want to give back.”
While his professional playing career never took off, Jordan Travis’ story is one of heart, leadership and determination — a reminder that success in football isn’t always measured in snaps played.
