Vikings vs. Lions Prediction
The Vikings have now advanced to 10-2 on the season after they survived a close matchup against the New York Jets in Week 13. They’re currently on a two-game winning streak and are only the second team this season to reach the 10-win threshold.
Minnesota was able to get their running game going last week as Dalvin Cook rebounded for an 86-yard performance after going 22-42-0 the week prior against New England. He – and Alexander Mattison – both found the end zone and were able to help carry Minnesota to a victory.
However, the Jets kept the Vikings’ passing game in check last week, with Cousins just throwing for 173 yards on a 60% completion percentage, while Jalen Reagor finished with the second most receiving yards on the team with just 38. The big explosive plays weren’t there, and the Jets’ secondary did a tremendous job of keeping a potent passing attack in check.
The key for Minnesota to win this key divisional matchup rests on getting the passing attack operating at full strength. The Lions have shored things up in terms of run defense in recent weeks, allowing just 116 yards on average over the last three games, while their pass defense has allowed the 8th most passing yards over that same time frame. They’ll need to find an answer for slowing down Justin Jefferson in order to walk out of this one with a victory.
For the Lions, they are now at 5-7 on the season and have won four out of their last five games. Their offense has been explosive over that stretch and has proven to be one of the more high-powered units in the entire league.
In fact, Detroit is now scoring the 6th most points per game this season. This is more than Cincinnati, Miami, and Minnesota, to name a few teams, and they’ve shown that they can hang with the best defenses in the league.
The re-emergence of D’Andre Swift on offense will go a long way to Detroit continuing its offensive performance, but the passing game should be the star of the show yet again this week in a matchup against the Vikings.
Minnesota is allowing the most passing yards per game this season with 283.6 per game. However, they’ve become exceptionally susceptible in the last few weeks, allowing 345.7 yards per contest. Jared Goff and the Lions’ passing offense should be able to move the ball freely in this one, especially if their rookie WR Jameson Williams can begin being integrated into the game plan.
The key for Detroit to pull off the upset this week against Minnesota is to take advantage of the matchup through the air. If Goff is able to execute and they can continue to put up points on offense, we should see a high-scoring affair that ends with Detroit moving to 6-7 on the season.
