San Francisco 49ers owner Jed York was arrested in Ohio for soliciting prostitution over the weekend. York was convicted of disorderly conduct and possession of criminal tools after pleading no contest to two charges and was sentenced to one day in jail for each offence, getting credit for time served.
The 49ers CEO was also fined $150 for disorderly conduct and $1,000 for possessing criminal tools. The eyebrow-raising turn of events drew takes and remarks from all quarters, with one former Niners star raising some pointed questions in the aftermath.
Ex-49ers Safety Blasts Jed York’s Conduct
During Monday’s segment of the “Grit Code” podcast, former Niners safety Donte Whitner demanded accountability from York after his embarrassing arrest.
“I’ve got one question: does ‘protect the shield’ only apply to the players?” Whitner asked.
“Because players hear it from Day 1, ‘Don’t embarrass the league, don’t embarrass the organization. Don’t become a distraction, represent the shield.’ When a player [expletive] up, everybody questions his character, judgment, maturity and whether he can represent the organization.
“Keep that same energy when it’s the owner because protecting the shield should start with the people who own the shield. When the owner becomes the story, the whole franchise wears it. Players get fined, suspended and called into meetings. So, who calls the owner upstairs? Who tells Jed, ‘You embarrassed the organization?’ Who gives him the speech about decision-making?”

York has been the franchise’s CEO since 2008 and the majority owner since 2024. Under his leadership, the 49ers have made the Super Bowl three times and he was responsible for the team’s move to Levi’s Stadium in 2014. He hired coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch in 2017.
York is also the co-owner of Scottish football team Rangers F.C. and English side Leeds United.
According to documents filed in Santa Clara County Superior Court, York filed for divorce from his wife, Danielle, in May.
While speaking to the press this week, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan denied that York’s arrest would affect the team’s preparation for the season.
“My view is, as the coach, does it affect us as a team?” Shanahan said. “From a football standpoint, it has no effect on us. As far as what we do day to day, what we talk about, [it] hasn’t been mentioned in a meeting today, it doesn’t have to do with what happens on the field.”
The 49ers have been the subject of several column inches during the NFL offseason, with issues ranging from season-ending injuries to Shanahan’s car accident and now York’s arrest.
An NFL spokesperson revealed that York’s arrest would be reviewed under the league’s personal conduct policy.
