The Vikings’ season has been a case of “close yet so far.” Their 3-5 record could easily be 8-0 if the ball had bounced differently in those losses.

Minnesota’s biggest loss is 7 points, with four of their five defeats decided by 4 or fewer points. Granted, two of their wins have been in similarly close games, but a record of 2-5 in one-score games underlines the frustration this season has brought for the Vikings.

The problem has been that, as favorites, they simply haven’t lived up to the billing. They are 1-3 against the spread as favorites. In contrast, they are 3-1 against the spread as underdogs. However, they have only converted one of those games where they were underdogs into a victory (Week 3 against Seattle). If they lose another close game here, serious questions about Mike Zimmer being on the hot seat will continue to be asked.

Chargers are learning to close out games despite tough losses

The Chargers are 5-3, but their season has been as much of a roller coaster. A close loss to the Cowboys in Week 2 was forgivable, especially when they subsequently reeled off wins over the Chiefs, Raiders, and Browns. However, a crushing loss to the Ravens was followed by a frustrating defeat to the Patriots. Their Week 9 victory over the Eagles was fine but when compared to how the Raiders manhandled Philadelphia, the nature of the victory raises more concerns.

The Chargers are 4-2 in one-score games this year, which is a credit to head coach Brandon Staley. They are also 5-3 against the spread and 3-1 in their four home games as favorites. They are a tough team to judge, but in Staley, they seem to have a head coach getting it right more often than previous holders of his job.

    Vikings vs. Chargers prediction

It is almost impossible to underestimate the ability of both of these franchises to throw away a game. The Vikings did it just last week against the Ravens. The Chargers are historically notable for not getting out of their own way. That is what makes this game between the Vikings and Chargers so much fun from a prediction standpoint.

Right now, the edge goes to Staley over Zimmer. Staley has done a lot of good this year, and with two teams that essentially cancel each other out talent-wise, that coaching difference could tell the tale. The Chargers should win, but this game is set to go right down to the wire and could go either way at the bell.
