Justin Jefferson Sets NFL Record as Youngest to Reach Historic Mark

When the Vikings selected Justin Jefferson with the No. 22 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, they surely expected big things, but it’s hard to imagine they knew just how special he would become.

With his catch against the Atlanta Falcons, Jefferson has tied Larry Fitzgerald as the youngest wide receiver in NFL history to record 500 receptions. He reached the milestone at 26 years and 90 days old, which is the exact age Fitzgerald was when he achieved it.

Being mentioned alongside Fitzgerald is an achievement in itself. The Cardinals legend finished his career with 1,432 receptions, 17,492 yards, and 121 touchdowns. Numbers most receivers can only dream of.

Jefferson is off to about as good a start as possible, entering the game against the Falcons with 499 catches for 7,476 yards and 97 touchdowns. With his latest reception, he further established his first six years in the league as some of the best ever by a wide receiver.

The Vikings superstar reached 500 receptions in just 79 career games, the second fastest in NFL history behind Michael Thomas, who accomplished it in an impressive 69 games. Regardless, Jefferson is on pace for a career that could rival some of the all-time greats.

For context, Jerry Rice, widely regarded as the best wide receiver in NFL history, took 103 games, and Larry Fitzgerald reached the milestone in 86 games.

Jefferson has now cemented himself in elite company and will look to maintain the level of play he’s shown since entering the league. So far in his career, his 17-game average stands at 109 catches, 1,629 yards, and nine touchdowns, truly impressive numbers.

With J.J. McCarthy taking over as the team’s starter in 2025, Jefferson has now entered a season with three different quarterbacks, the others being Kirk Cousins and Sam Darnold. His consistency despite so much turnover at the quarterback position only further demonstrates how exceptional he has been.

While Jefferson and McCarthy’s connection got off to a slow start in the Vikings’ Week 1 game against the Bears, they heated up in the second half and will look to build an even stronger rapport as the season continues.

Jefferson is a once-in-a-generation player, and by tying Fitzgerald as the youngest receiver to reach 500 catches, he has added another impressive achievement to an already remarkable resume.
