There is great intrigue surrounding Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy this offseason. The team made a big decision by letting Sam Darnold walk in free agency after a career year that resulted in a playoff appearance.
After putting so much faith in McCarthy, the pressure will be on to get results this year. As the Vikings began their preseason training camp, head coach Kevin O’Connell shared his thoughts on the team’s new starting quarterback.
Kevin O’Connell Delivers Verdict on J.J. McCarthy’s Offseason as Vikings Prepare for New Season
It’s safe to say that the jury is out on McCarthy; the Vikings’ commitment to their young quarterback is a promising sign, but their faith won’t be tested until September. It does seem, however, as though the quarterback has been making a good impression.
O’Connell stated to the press that McCarthy’s offseason has been exemplary and that he has built a strong rapport with his teammates.
“He’s absolutely had a phenomenal offseason, from the time before the offseason program started through the nine weeks that we were allowed to be on the grass, and then I think it’s been awesome this summer seeing these guys getting together, working.”

The coach then spoke about how McCarthy’s teammates have warmed to him as they’ve spent more time together.
“You feel the energy and the enthusiasm not only that J.J. has brought to the group, but that they’re reciprocating right back to him.”
McCarthy landed in the perfect spot in last year’s draft, falling to a well-run Vikings organization with a top offensive mind in O’Connell and a wealth of talented teammates. The young quarterback has had a year to familiarize himself with the team’s playbook and make himself at home in Minnesota, and he should be ready to go come Week 1.
What Will McCarthy Bring to Minnesota in 2025?
Even the most talented rookie quarterbacks can look out of their depth once they set foot on an NFL field. Take Caleb Williams, who was lauded as a generational talent before last year’s draft, only to be sacked a league-high 68 times in his rookie year.
McCarthy, though, has a calmness that defies his youth, regardless of the occasion. There were doubts about the significance of his involvement in Michigan’s 2023 National Championship win, but the quarterback did what was asked of him.
While never being asked to take a game by the scruff of the neck, McCarthy provided a composed foundation on which Michigan thrived. Jim Harbaugh’s run-heavy scheme is now in effect with the Los Angeles Chargers, but nobody will doubt Justin Herbert if the team finds success.
The Vikings have, at worst, a composed game manager who will successfully deliver the ball into the hands of their elite playmakers. At best, McCarthy proves himself a serial winner who gets it done in the biggest moments.
