‘Given the Keys to the Porsche, Just Don’t Crash It’ — Super Bowl Champion Sends Bold Message to Vikings’ J.J. McCarthy

J.J. McCarthy is compared to Josh Allen as Willie Colon issues a memorable warning to the Vikings’ new QB ahead of his NFL debut.

The pressure of being a franchise quarterback in the NFL is enormous, and it only intensifies when expectations come from both within the locker room and around the league. For Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy, the bar has already been set high, and now the spotlight sharpens with his long-awaited debut just months away.

What Makes J.J. McCarthy’s Situation So Perfect for Success?

During an appearance on the “Good Morning Football” podcast, former Super Bowl champion Willie Colon offered a direct message for the young quarterback: “He’s been given the keys to the Porsche. Just don’t crash it young man.”

That statement wasn’t just colorful commentary. It captured the level of trust and pressure that now rests on McCarthy’s shoulders.

Colon explained why the situation is ideal for the former Michigan standout. Surrounded by playmakers like Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, and T.J. Hockenson, McCarthy is walking into what Colon described as a “perfect situation.”

Minnesota’s coaching staff and front office clearly believe in him, enough to turn the page on the Sam Darnold era and build their future around the No. 10 overall pick.

“This team is ready to win now,” Colon said, emphasizing that McCarthy doesn’t need to be a hero. “All he has to do is play quarterback.” It’s a vote of confidence that comes with a warning: The car is powerful, but the margin for error is razor-thin.

How Has McCarthy Already Won Over the Locker Room?

While Colon provided the external view, defensive tackle Harrison Phillips offered the internal lens, speaking to McCarthy’s influence behind the scenes.

In a June 2025 article by PFSN’s Jordon Lawrenz, Phillips revealed the quarterback’s proactive leadership since returning from a season-ending injury.

“I’ve commented before about (how) he came to me the week after his injury to learn more about the defense,” Phillips said. “He’s really stepped up in the personal power role (this year)…just having conversation.”

A standout moment came when Phillips likened McCarthy to 2024 NFL MVP Josh Allen, stating, “He reminds me of Josh Allen when I was with him in Buffalo… understanding the power that he has to lead this organization.”

Though McCarthy hasn’t played an NFL snap, he’s already impressed the locker room with his confidence, curiosity, and willingness to connect. The Vikings’ collapse in 2024-25, including a lopsided playoff loss to the Los Angeles Rams, only intensifies the need for a new leader under center.

With Darnold now with the Seattle Seahawks and McCarthy healthy, Minnesota’s gamble on youth and upside begins now. Whether he lives up to the Allen comparisons or simply avoids “crashing the Porsche,” the expectations are clear and the road ahead is unforgiving.
