With the news of the NFL allowing its players to enter the 2028 Olympics to be part of Flag Football, there has been speculation about what the Team USA roster could look like. One of the quarterbacks people have been discussing is Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, but not everyone is a fan of that idea.

The current USA Flag Football quarterback, Darrell Doucette, has been vocal regarding his confidence in his abilities on the field, and comments regarding the situation have resurfaced after the NFL’s decision. Let’s take a closer look at what he said and if Mahomes has responded since they came out.

Darrell Doucette’s Comments Regarding Patrick Mahomes

In an interview with TMZ Sports in Aug. 2024, Doucette did not let his confidence waver as he declared himself the better quarterback.

“At the end of the day, I feel like I’m better than Patrick Mahomes because of my IQ of the game. I know right now he’s the best in the league, I know he’s more accurate, I know he has all these intangibles, but when it comes to flag football, I feel like I know more than him.”

Doucette has some hardware himself in the flag football world, as he joined the United States national team in 2020. He won a gold medal at the 2022 World Games, the first time the US was involved in the event, and was named the 2023 IFAF Americas Continental Flag Football Championship MVP. Doucette would also defend the championship in 2024.

Mahomes has been one of the most skilled passers in the National Football League and has shown the ability to do things on the football field that we have never seen before. In August 2024, he also commented on Doucette’s comments with a simple GIF to make his feelings known.

Mahomes has not publicly discussed potentially joining the 2028 Summer Olympics team, so the conversation will continue until we get word regarding his availability for the Games. In his eight-year career thus far, he has completed 66.6% of his passes for 32,352 yards with 245 passing touchdowns to 74 interceptions in 112 regular-season games. He also has a pair of NFL MVP Awards to his name.

Doucette or Mahomes under center, the US Flag Football team is expected to be the favorites to win the gold medal in the sport’s inaugural Olympic appearance. What other countries also participate in the event is yet to be revealed as the Games approach.
