The New York Giants had a crowded backfield coming into 2025. After working his way into the starting running back role, Tyrone Tracy Jr. finished 2024 as the Giants’ leading rusher with 192 carries for 839 yards and five touchdowns across 12 starts in 17 games. He added another 38 receptions for 284 yards and a touchdown, making him a dual-threat running back.
However, his 2025 hasn’t gone as planned. His yards per carry dropped from 4.4 in 2024 to 3.1 in 2025. He played in the first three games, starting two, but saw only 22 carries. That drop in production is a direct result of last week’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs, when Tracy left early in the second quarter.
Will Tyrone Tracy Jr. play in Week 4 against the Los Angeles Chargers?
Tracy suffered a dislocated shoulder in last week’s loss to the Chiefs. He went down after he was sandwiched by two defenders on the second play of the second quarter and didn’t return.
Tracy is expected to miss as many as four weeks.

In his place, the Giants are expected to lean on rookie Cam Skattebo and veteran Devin Singletary, with the former likely getting the lion’s share of touches.
The Giants drafted Skattebo, who was coming off a solid college career, including an electrifying performance during the College Football Playoff against Texas. He put up 284 total yards, three touchdowns and a touchdown pass on a trick play, giving him a national profile heading into the draft.
Skattebo was drafted in the fourth round and quickly became a fan favorite because of his self-effacing appearances with the press, during which he consistently said he had not done anything or earned anything yet in the NFL.
Like rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart, fans have been calling for Skattebo to get more touches out of the backfield.
After he took over for Tracy, the Giants got a sampling of what he could do. Skattebo rushed 10 times for 60 yards and a touchdown and added six receptions for 61 yards.
His hard-nose running style and all-out effort had fans jumping up and down. Now that the Giants have committed to a youth movement at quarterback, have Malik Nabors at wide receiver, and have been forced to make changes in the backfield, they will see if they can build a young nucleus on offense that can find success.
