What Happened to Tyrod Taylor? A Look at the Jets QB’s Injury and Why Justin Fields Isn’t In vs. Dolphins

Just three weeks after being named the starter, the New York Jets suffered a massive blow in the form of an injury to Tyrod Taylor.

Things keep going from bad to worse for the New York Jets. After high hopes for the season following the appointment of Aaron Glenn as head coach and the addition of a new quarterback, the team was going nowhere, registering just three wins on the season in 13 weeks.

It prompted a change under center as well, with Tyrod Taylor taking over the quarterbacking duties from Justin Fields. Unfortunately, facing the Miami Dolphins in Week 14, Taylor seems to have suffered a massive injury.

What Happened to Tyrod Taylor?

Early in the game, the Dolphins were en route to a dominating display, going up 21-0 in the first quarter itself. However, the situation worsened for the Jets when Taylor had to head back to the locker room.

For most people watching the game, it was unclear when Taylor suffered the injury, but it was clearly a massive blow, as the team had to switch to Brady Cook to take over in the meantime.

Soon after, Adam Schefter confirmed the exact nature of his ailment on X, stating, “Jets QB Tyrod Taylor has a groin injury and his questionable to return today.” In the brief time that he was inserted into the starting lineup, the results for New York were immediate.

The offense looked more cohesive, averaging 18.5 points in his two games as a starter, while winning a 27-24 thriller against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 13. However, in the long run, a detriment in quarterback play might prove beneficial for the franchise.

With the 2025 season likely over from a competitive standpoint, a war chest of draft picks acquired in the Quinnen Williams and Sauce Gardner trades should set them up nicely for the 2026 NFL Draft.

Making some major moves, Glenn should be able to build the team in his image, with the pieces he wants to keep on the roster. In Taylor’s absence, rookie Brady Cook took over the quarterback responsibilities.

Fields, who had been the starter for a majority of the season, did not take the field in Taylor’s absence after a knee injury kept him out of practice before the Jets ruled him out for the game entirely.
