Tyler Goodson Injury Update: Latest on Colts RB’s Status After Early Exit in Preseason Game vs. Packers

Colts running back Tyler Goodson suffered an injury in preseason Week 2 game against the Packers. Here's the latest update on him.

The Colts are back in action for their second preseason game against the Green Bay Packers. The Colts QB situation has been one to monitor throughout the offseason with both Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones vying for the nod. Both quarterbacks have seen action in the first half, but beyond that, the Colts lost RB Tyler Goodson to injury in the second quarter.

What Happened to Tyler Goodson?

On a play in the second quarter, Goodson was banged up after a play. He left the field with his left arm in a brace.

After leaving the field, Goodson was declared out. His day will end with two carries for 10 yards and a touchdown. His injury ruined a solid start to the day for Goodson when he took a 2nd-and-goal carry in from 3 yards out for the Colts’ first touchdown of the day.

Goodson has been looking to solidify his status as a potential contributor to the Colts offense. He was on track to have a role on this Colts team.

While Jonathan Taylor is the clear RB1 in the offense, Goodson used the preseason to show why he deserves a chance behind Taylor. Unfortunately, he will now be awaiting the final diagnosis on his elbow injury, hoping it doesn’t sideline him for too long.

Fantasy Impact of Goodson’s Injury

While no one is drafting Goodson in fantasy, his status does matter and not just for dynasty leagues. Rookie Day 3 pick DJ Giddens has been a popular late-round Best Ball selection who could have redraft appeal if he found his way into increased action. Never forget those two weeks in 2022 when Deon Jackson was an RB1 because of all the injuries to the Colts’ running backs.

Goodson played ahead of the rookie in the Colts’ first preseason game, but that flipped in today’s contest. Giddens already appeared to be the favorite for RB2 duties behind Taylor.

Even if Goodson’s injury only costs him a couple of weeks, this gives Giddens more opportunities to get reps in practice, solidifying his RB2 status. He’s still nothing more than a late-round flier and likely the first person fantasy managers are dropping once the hot early-season waiver wire pickups emerge.

However, Giddens now belongs more firmly on the fantasy radar in redraft leagues as the presumptive handcuff to a back that has missed 16 games in the past three seasons.
