Trinidad Chambliss Denied Sixth Year of Eligibility, Putting 2026 NFL Draft Projection in Spotlight

According to ESPN college football insider Pete Thamel, Chambliss’ waiver for a sixth year of eligibility has been denied by the NCAA.

This denial follows a verbal denial issued by the NCAA back in December. Chambliss and Ole Miss can still appeal the decision, but it’s unclear how successful they will be after two separate denials, and Chambliss is already operating on a truncated timeline.

Players who took part in the College Football Playoff have until January 23 to declare for the 2026 NFL Draft, and the All-Star Game circuit enters the forefront shortly after that.

East-West Shrine Bowl practices begin just after the extended January 23 deadline, with the game kicking off on January 27. Senior Bowl practices, meanwhile, run from January 27 through January 29. Chambliss could be a last-minute addition to either roster, but regardless, the clock is ticking.

It’s possible Chambliss could declare for the 2026 NFL Draft while his appeal ruling is still being processed, then choose to return if the appeal is granted before the deadline. Players have declared and then entered the transfer portal in a similar manner. However, if the deadline passes, Chambliss’ situation has few precedents.

Chambliss has two weeks before the extended NFL Draft declaration deadline for CFB Playoff competitors, and All-Star week immediately follows that fateful date. That’s the time Chambliss and his team have left to submit their last effort at earning an appeal.

Chambliss has stated his desire to return to school and play a second season with the Rebels, but if his final appeal is denied, he’ll enter a polarizing 2026 NFL Draft QB class.

Chambliss 2026 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Ole Miss Passer Has Early-Round Potential

Chambliss was one of the greatest stories of the 2025 college football season, but even before making the leap to the SEC, he was one of the most productive passers across all levels of college football.

After playing high school football at Forrest Hills Northern in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Chambliss committed to play collegiate ball for the Division II Ferris State Bulldogs in 2021. He redshirted in 2021, did not play in 2022, and started just one game in 2023, before elevating to the starting role in 2024.

In his lone season as the full-time starter at Ferris State, Chambliss led the Bulldogs to a Division II National Championship. Along the way, he threw for 2,925 yards, 26 touchdowns, and six interceptions, while running for 1,019 yards and 25 additional scores, and finished as a finalist for the Harlon Hill Trophy.

All this, and Chambliss still wasn’t the initial starter over Austin Simmons when he transferred to Ole Miss in 2025. But the cream rises to the top, and that’s exactly what Chambliss did when opportunity called.

In 13 games as the starter for the Rebels, Chambliss led Ole Miss to a 11-2 record and a CFB Semifinal berth. He completed 294 of 445 attempts (66.1%) for 3,937 yards, 22 TDs, and just three INTs, while also running for 527 yards and eight scores, logging an elite PFSN QB impact score of 90.3.

As a prospect, Chambliss has a number of exciting qualities. At 6’1″, 200 pounds, he falls below prototypical size thresholds, but he’s a spry and nimble athlete with good versatility between in-structure and off-platform situations.

While the Ole Miss offense has been a source of uncertainty in previous evaluations, Chambliss displays clear pro-ready characteristics within that system, and his elite competitive toughness and poise are defining strengths that underpin it all.

Chambliss is a fast thinker who can recognize blitz looks pre-snap and identify hot routes, he can keep pocket depth and navigate away from pressure, he can anticipate windows over the middle of the field, and he can throw with incredible touch and situational precision.

Chambliss’ arm is average at best, and there are times when he progresses too quickly on high-to-low reads and misses opportunities down the field. However, as a calm and collected distributor with adversity-hedging athleticism, great processing ability, situational awareness, and accuracy, his profile is easy to like.

Should he declare for the 2026 NFL Draft, Chambliss would be a 24-year old rookie, but he could very well take starting reps early in his career with his pocket discipline, processing, and accuracy.

On PFSN’s consensus board, Chambliss is ranked as QB4 behind Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza, Oregon’s Dante Moore, and Alabama’s Ty Simpson, and he has a fringe Day 2 grade on the PFSN NFL Draft Hub. A strong pre-draft process, however, could elevate him to potential late Round 1 territory.
