From sixth-round pick to the highest-paid guard in NFL history. Trey Smith’s journey with the Kansas City Chiefs just reached its pinnacle with a contract that rewrites the record books. After using the franchise tag to keep him in Kansas City, the Chiefs have now locked up one of Patrick Mahomes’ most trusted protectors with a deal that makes him the richest interior lineman in league history.
What Makes Trey Smith’s Contract Historic for NFL Guards?
The Chiefs have signed Smith to a four-year, $94 million contract extension, including $70 million guaranteed. This deal makes him the highest-paid guard in NFL history, in terms of both annual salary and guaranteed money.

Beyond breaking records at his position, the deal also makes him one of the highest-paid sixth-round picks in NFL history, trailing Tom Brady, of course.
The Chiefs franchise tagged Smith back in February, and he will still get paid the $23.4 million from that tag this year. Following that, he will make roughly the same amount of money annually for the remainder of his extension.

This massive contract locks in one of Mahomes’ best protectors for the next four years. With Trey Smith and Creed Humphrey both under lucrative long-term deals, the Chiefs are investing heavily in their offensive line, paying the pair roughly $41.5 million per season to anchor the interior and keep their franchise quarterback upright.
How Will This Deal Transform Smith’s Net Worth?
Smith was a sixth-round pick who signed a four-year deal with the Chiefs after he was drafted. Due to his performance, his salary bumped from $660,000 to $3.36 million by the end of that contract. In total, Smith made $6.5 million in his first four years in the league.
With $70 million being guaranteed in his new extension, it’s safe to say that by 2029, Smith’s net worth will be well into the 11-digit range from football alone.
While Smith currently has no major endorsement deals, smart investments and potential future endorsements could boost that number even higher.
It’s a deserving amount of money for the former sixth-round selection who has been so consistent for the Chiefs since they drafted him.
