Trevor Lawrence is entering his fifth NFL season. The 2021 first overall pick has had a rocky start to his career with the Jacksonville Jaguars, but is hopeful heading into 2025.
The team recently began OTAs, where Lawrence gave his thoughts on his career, new head coach Liam Coen, and first-round pick Travis Hunter.

Coen will be Lawrence’s third full-time head coach in his five-year career. Urban Meyer came out of retirement to select the quarterback and turned the Jaguars into a tire fire. Lawrence led the NFL with 17 interceptions in his rookie year, while posting 3,641 yards and 12 touchdowns. Meyer was fired after an embarrassing 2-11 start.
Doug Pederson was hired for the 2022 season and instantly turned the team around. Jacksonville won the AFC South with a 9-8 record, and Lawrence had his best season to date, throwing for 4,113 yards, 25 touchdowns, and eight interceptions.
Jacksonville was a trendy Super Bowl pick heading into 2023 and started 8-3 before faltering down the stretch. The Jaguars went 1-5 in their final six games, lost the division lead, and missed the playoffs. Lawrence regressed slightly, throwing for 4,016 yards, 21 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions.
The Jaguars signed Lawrence to a massive five-year, $275 million extension in the 2024 offseason. They committed to their franchise quarterback, but the regular season got off to an awful start. Jacksonville started 0-4, and Pederson’s seat got hotter by the day.
Lawrence missed two games after a Week 9 shoulder injury, and his season ended after he took a brutal hit to the head in Week 13. In 10 games, he threw for 2,045 yards, 11 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. Pederson was fired after the season, and the team hired Coen.
The 2021 Pro Bowler spoke after the team’s first day of OTAs, and Jaguars Senior Writer John Oehser wrote an article about Lawrence’s comments. The quarterback said, “There’s an energy on the practice field,” before talking about the team’s first-round pick, Travis Hunter.

He said, “He has a lot of juice. He can run all day, a lot of energy. I love it. He’s always dapping guys up and bringing juice every day. He has a high motor. He’s like a kid. He runs around all day and doesn’t get tired. You can’t have enough of that.
“As far as just talent, it kind of speaks for itself: Ball skills, run after the catch. He’s very explosive. I didn’t realize how explosive he was in and out of cuts. He’s impressive to watch, and we’ve gotten to connect a couple of times. It’s only going to keep getting better and better.
“We’ve only worked together for a couple days now, so we have some time to really dial in on the details when it comes to building relationship with receivers.”
Lawrence then spoke about his career path and how he’s not looking at the past. He said, “You can’t change the past. I would love to have had a little more success up until this point, but this is where we’re at, and I love where we’re at. I have a lot of confidence in it, and we just have to keep putting the work in out here every day to prepare ourselves for the fall.”
Jacksonville begins the 2025 regular season hosting the Carolina Panthers before traveling to face Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals. Lawrence’s contract keeps him in Jacksonville’s plans for the foreseeable future, but this is a critical season to determine how he stacks up in the quarterback-heavy AFC.
