‘I Need to Really Turn It On’ — Trevor Lawrence Makes Feelings Clear on Jaguars HC Liam Coen’s Offensive System

With a revamped roster and a new offensive coordinator, Trevor Lawrence says 2025 is the year the Jaguars must turn promise into performance.

Trevor Lawrence sits in the podcast studio on the eve of his fifth season in the NFL, and the weight of expectations is written all over his face. The Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback knows this season isn’t just another year. It’s the one where everything has to come together, where the promise finally meets the performance, where a franchise quarterback proves he can actually lead a franchise.

Stability at Last? Trevor Lawrence Optimistic After Jaguars Offseason Moves

When asked about entering his fifth season, Lawrence didn’t shy away from acknowledging the chaos he’s endured. Three head coaches and three offensive systems in five years would rattle most quarterbacks, but Lawrence praised the work Jacksonville did this offseason to stabilize his situation.

He explained, “I really feel good about the situation we’re in. I love Coach [Liam] Coen and the whole staff and everyone, all the guys that were brought in free agency. Just good dudes, good players, too. But I really feel like we’ve done some great things this offseason.”

The Jaguars made a big splash by trading up in the NFL draft to select defensive back and wide receiver hybrid Travis Hunter second overall. They also added guard Patrick Mekari in free agency, giving Lawrence more protection and weapons to work with.

Lawrence expressed particular confidence in Liam Coen’s offensive system. Coen coached the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to the fourth-best offense by points scored in 2024-25 as their offensive coordinator, and also had two stints with the Los Angeles Rams.

“I have a lot of confidence in this system, it is tried and true,” Lawrence said, adding, “it’s a great system for quarterbacks.”

At 25, Lawrence understands the urgency of his situation. He’s led the Jaguars to the playoffs just once so far, and he knows he’s entering his physical prime with expectations at an all-time high.

“I feel like this is like getting into my prime. I got a lot of good years left ahead of me and I need to really turn it on. And I think what we’ve built around me and what they’ve done this offseason has been a great start.”

What Does Lawrence’s Contract Situation Mean for Jacksonville’s Future?

The 2025 season represents a unique window for Lawrence and the Jaguars. His cap hit of $17 million represents just over 6% of the salary cap, giving Jacksonville maximum flexibility to surround him with talent.

However, this financial freedom won’t last long. Lawrence signed a five-year, $275 million extension that will significantly increase his cap impact in future seasons. The deal makes him the fourth-highest paid quarterback annually, trailing only Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott, 2024-25 MVP Josh Allen, and Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow.

This creates a now-or-never dynamic for Jacksonville. With Lawrence’s affordable contract and the talent they’ve added around him, the Jaguars have built what should be their best roster in years. The question isn’t whether Lawrence has the tools to succeed. It’s whether he can finally put it all together when it matters most.
