Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce’s Comments Hint at More Than Just One Last Ride

Despite logging career lows with just 823 receiving yards and three touchdowns last season — and falling short in the biggest game of the year — Kelce said coming back was never truly in doubt.

“It wasn’t a very tough [decision] for me,” he told reporters. “I know I’m getting older, but at the same time, I still feel like I got a lot that I can prove in this league.”

Kelce said the Super Bowl loss didn’t feel like a final chapter.

“I really didn’t feel like it was my last game,” he said. “Just felt like I’ve got a lot more to prove.”

He emphasized the importance of letting emotions settle before making a decision, adding, “You don’t want to make decisions off initial emotions.”

His career resume includes 10 Pro Bowls, four first-team All-Pro honors and three Super Bowl titles, making him a lock for the Hall of Fame. Still, Kelce said he wasn’t ready to leave it all behind. He returned to Kansas City for mandatory minicamp after skipping OTAs and appears fully locked in.

“I love football,” Kelce said. “I don’t think I really thought about it [retiring] that much. My friends and family and the team, guys and women in this building, I love coming in to work every single day.”

Kelce’s quiet night in the Chiefs’ 40-22 Super Bowl loss to the Eagles still looms large, and it’s part of what’s driving his return. He finished with just four catches for 39 yards in that game.

“Last year wasn’t a success for me,” Kelce admitted. “I think I failed, especially in that last game in being a leader and being the one that can step up and make plays.”

As for what comes after 2025, the future remains open-ended.

“We’ll try and figure out something for next year,” he added, leaving the door open to more football.

Still, even with just one year left on his contract, Kelce made one thing clear: “I can’t see myself ever playing anywhere else. I’m only interested in Super Bowl rings.”
