Chiefs TE Travis Kelce’s Done It All: Now What?

On the latest episode of his “New Heights” podcast, Kelce’s convenient phrasing as he reacted to Mahomes’ ACL tear has been largely taken as a hint at impending retirement.

“[Mahomes]’s a fearless, fearless warrior with this football thing,” Kelce said. “He’s going to make sure he comes back stronger than ever. Hopefully the Chiefs can get him back as soon as possible. I know right now it’s kind of right around that Week 1 or the beginning of the season next year. I know he’s going to be doing everything he can to get back out on that field for the Chiefs as soon as possible.”

It was swiftly (pun intended) pointed out that Kelce referred to the Chiefs from afar, not in the sense of “we” as a team, a subtle but telling sign of where the 13-year veteran’s mindset stands with the franchise in complete disarray. Where there’s smoke, there’s fire… and this has fueled speculation that Kelce may be ready for life beyond the gridiron.

Few would be surprised if Kelce retired, in all honesty. Life is undeniably good for him, with absolutely nothing left to prove on the field. The three-time Super Bowl champion, 10-time Pro Bowler, and seven-time All-Pro selection is already a sure-fire lock for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. His legacy is undeniable, and there’s much more to look forward to.

Kelce not only has one of the most successful athlete-driven podcasts of all time, but he’s also engaged to Taylor Swift, the biggest pop star of the modern era and one of the most powerful cultural figures in music. The combination of professional success, financial security, personal fulfillment, and the Chiefs’ golden age dissolving before our eyes makes retirement a natural conversation.

“In my opinion, to nail that decision you gotta step away from the game for a little bit,” retired Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce said Monday on ESPN while fielding questions about his brother’s retirement plans.

“Play these last three games, enjoy them with your teammates, enjoy them with your coaches. The team is going to be different whether or not you come back next year. Play these three games and then let it sink in. It’ll come to you with time.”

After soaking in the season’s final moments, Kelce can decide whether the curtain will officially fall on an illustrious career. The next chapter may be unwritten, but these last few games give Kelce the space to start plotting on his own terms.

A New Hierarchy in the NFL, Chiefs’ Future in Question

Frankly, it’s been evident for some time that the Chiefs’ legend has lost a step or two. Kelce is now 36 years old, an age at which almost all NFL skill players have passed their peak, and statistical production inevitably declines. Numbers in recent seasons reflect a stark decline from the elite production that once defined his career.

Meanwhile, the Chiefs have lost five of their last six games and have been eliminated from playoff contention. With Mahomes now rebounding from a major ACL surgery, there’s additional uncertainty about the quarterback’s ability to return to his previous level of play.

Even more uncertain is whether the Kansas City dynasty that secured three rings through five Super Bowl appearances will ever return to championship contention. Nevertheless, these are devastating times for the Chiefs Kingdom, which mark a new hierarchy in the NFL.
