It has been a while since the Kansas City Chiefs played in a regular-season game with as many stakes as their clash against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 2 of the 2025 NFL season. After getting annihilated in Super Bowl 59 to the tune of 40-22 that ended their quest for the first-ever three-peat in the Super Bowl era, the Chiefs wanted to respond in kind.
Unfortunately, without their two best wide receivers, it was going to be a tall order for the dynasty of the era. Instead, they were hoping for a turn-back-the-clock performance from their legendary future Hall of Fame tight end Travis Kelce. For the most part, it looked like he would come through. However, a crucial mistake in the fourth quarter turned the game on its head and immediately led to some name-calling from the fans.
Which Mistake by Travis Kelce Infuriated the Fans?
Over the last few seasons, the 10-time Pro Bowler’s numbers have taken an undeniable hit. After seven consecutive seasons recording over 1,000 receiving yards, Kelce first fell short of the number in 2023.
However, that number went down further last year, when he ended the season with the lowest total of his career at 823 yards. Unlike previous seasons, Kelce couldn’t elevate to the fifth gear come the postseason.
This season, it remained to be seen if the three-time Super Bowl champion had one last hurrah in him. In the season opener, he had an overall solid game, recording 47 yards on two receptions while adding a touchdown.
He looked to be continuing with more of the same, with 61 yards against Philadelphia. However, with a chance to take a 17-13 lead, quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw an easy pass into the end zone for the veteran tight end.

Unfortunately, Kelce wasn’t able to hold onto the football, and it bounced up off his arms for an easy Eagles interception that ultimately resulted in a touchdown. His mistake turned the tide of the entire contest, and fans were understandably furious.

That was on Kelce not Mahomes

As one fan explained the play, “Travis Kelce dropped a pass that was a TD and it turned into an INT…That was on Kelce not Mahomes.” The immediate reaction was a rather simple one, as most fans believed the seven-time All-Pro was near the end of his run.
As one fan simply put it, “Travis Kelce is washed.” Others followed suit, with comments of “Kelce Washed,” and the more expletive-laden “Travis Kelce is f***ing washed,” making the rounds on X.

Others brought out the infamous comparison of stone hands. As one fan gave him the moniker, “Travis ‘Stone Hands’ Kelce,” another expanded on the sentiment by stating, “Kelce hands and feet of stone these days.”

The anger at potentially blowing the game open against the Eagles did not go down quietly. Some exclaimed, “Kelce are you f***ing kidding me?” while another fan was ready to be done with a legend of the game. “TRAVIS KELCE GET OFF MY F***ING TEAM.”

Unfortunately, it didn’t take long for some fans to go the personal route, as they said, “Travis Kelce it’s time to go be with Taylor swift.”

Even as his numbers have taken a hit in recent years, Kelce has been a reliable weapon for Mahomes in times of crisis. It is how the Chiefs have made it to the last three Super Bowls and won two of them.
However, if that quotient is also coming down as time passes, it might not be long before Kansas City is looking in another direction.
